We recently connected with Alexus Pittman and have shared our conversation below.
Alexus , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
So I realized at a very young age that my hands were gifted. Meaning I was always good at creating things with my hands weather that be writing, crafting things, doing hair, designing items and etc… I’ve always had a thing for making things look better and feel better with the visions I hold inside of my mind. When I started my candle company I kept thinking of all these cliche names then it just came to me out of nowhere. I was just like Handspun Delights! Yes that’s the name of my company because everything I create with my hands becomes a delight.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the candle making industry because when I first started on my spiritual journey I was always looking for new ways to make the lifestyle less complicated. With my candles I wanted to create something that people could have as an all in one manifestation tool. With the power of herbs, essential oils and healing crystals I started to create formulas based on the spiritual benefits of the items I added. Customers come to me for so many different kinds of candles for example I have created, house blessing candles, road opener candles, money manifestation candles, aphrodisiac candles, self love candles and many more! This definitely didn’t start overnight. I had to do years of research on what combinations can create what kind of outcomes and I had to learn the art of candle creating on a scientific level in order to have the best quality candles.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I started my business based off the inspiration I had gotten from my family. I have such a talented family that it’s kind of ridiculous lol. My mom was a beautician for years and started hair school when I was very young. She had worked in so many salons and inside of those salons I had so much inspiration as well from seeing people come in and selling anything from clothes, shoes, to make up, desserts etc… anything you can think of that was nice quality was being sold out of the beauty salons. My mom was a bona-fide hustler! I watched her create brands that bought in hundreds maybe even thousands of customers and I got so inspired and just always wanted that for me as well. My dad is a music producer. I grew up with a recording studio in my house and i used to hear the most amazing music from him and the people he made music with. He’s also a barber and I’ve watched him transform men from looking “ehhh” to looking like a full fledged GQ magazine model. My grandmother used to crochet and she would sell blankets, hats, scarves she even made skirts too. She passed away shortly after I started making candles and is a main reason why I couldn’t give up. My grandmother created jewelry that she sold. She also was an amazing artist. This woman could paint, draw and color so well. Handling business literally runs through my veins. To be completely honest I don’t think my family members even realize how much me seeing them do these things made such a positive impact on me. So because of them I could never let my vision for my business go away. They have paved the way for me to do the things that I have been doing with Handspun Delights for the last 5 years and for that I’m grateful.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
As far as an Ecommerce goes I now have a website that I have designed myself. Before that I tried etsy that was way too complicated for me. After Etsy I went to weebly and realized that i didnt have many options with that website company. Then I went to Facebook and would post my items and just add my cashapp tag. I realized that I needed a more professional approach so then I created a website through host gator. I’m not going to lie it was so confusing and frustrating because I’m not very tech savvy at all. I literally broke down and cried when I created that website because it was just so hard. Once my 2 year plan was up I decided to come to square online because they had the best options and the web builder was much more easier to manage in my opinion. My new website is everything to me and makes me feel like things are much more simplified and less complicated to manage. I get compliments all the time on how I created such a beautiful website. I also use canva app to create my business labels, flyers, business cards and etc… and I absolutely love it because I can make it look exactly the way I see it in my mind and it fits my brand so well.
