We recently connected with Alexsia Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Alexsia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I am 100% happier as a business owner versus when I worked for someone. I’ve had regular jobs in the past, and it was just always a schedule conflict, there wasn’t any room for growth, and I always in the back of my head thought this is not where I want to be. From 2017 to 2021, I was working jobs (except for two, which were a senior graduation photography company and a newborn photography company) that were not particularly anything I was interested in, but more so survival. I was depressed and truly unhappy working at the jobs I worked at, in 2017 I lost everything while and after graduating from college, Covid was going on starting in 2020 and I also lost a lot of family members from 2017 to 2022. It’s been a tough five years, but I didn’t give up on my dreams. I trusted in God to guide me. Even through the darkness, there was light shining my way to guide me through. In July 2020 I registered my business with the state of Georgia after a push from my cousin BreAnn Robinson. I’m forever thankful for that push because it opened up a million opportunities and so many memories my clients will forever cherish that I’ve captured for them.
Alexsia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello beautiful people, I am Alexsia Brown, owner, and photographer of Mysterylex Visions Photography LLC. We offer photography services such as business photography, event photography, seasonal photography, wedding, and birthday portraits, newborn photography, family portraits, and more. We also offer graphic design services such as flyers/social media ad-marketing flyers for business owners who may own a boutique, host a pop-up shop, and chefs who want to display their prices. I get all of the bubble guts out of my clients by making them feel comfortable, whether that’s playing their favorite songs, screaming “yassssss,” or something to boost their confidence and let them know they’re doing amazing, I also watch my client’s body language, so I can tell if they aren’t feeling a pose, or if it’s a wedding reception or any event and they’re tired of taking pictures. I also like to support my clients as they support me, so if my client has a business I support them by sharing their posts, telling people about them, or inquiring about services. My goal as your photographer is to create a safe space for you, boost your confidence/ self-love, provide you with an amazing experience, and capture beautiful moments for you. I am most proud, as this is the second year that I’ve established repeat clients, and I’ve been able to see those clients grow individually and with their families. For example, it’s an amazing feeling to capture a businesswoman for headshots, and year after year she books you for her daughter’s birthday, almost her other daughter’s wedding (scheduling conflict), and her granddaughter’s first newborn portraits. It’s also an amazing feeling when your clients are like family, and treat you as such.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the hustle mentality. It was costing me my health. As my cousin Crutch stated, I’ve always been a working horse; which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but taking time to rest and reset is so important. I received a wake-up call when I had to go to the hospital for overworking myself and going out the next day to do shoots back to back, one was a track hurdle and the other was a reception that turned into a surprise wedding, all on the same day. My body crashed. It was scary, I thought I was having a heart attack, but I truly just overworked myself and my iron was tremendously low. I had to practice what I preached to others, to take mental health breaks, breaks in general to reset; because when you don’t feel good, you’re no good to yourself or your business.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I’m still learning, but providing such an amazing experience for clients that they tell others about me (word of mouth) is number one. The second would be marketing on social media/ ads, and email marketing. Posting creative content also helps, such as reels and TikToks. Most importantly learning new things to help elevate the client’s experience and my craft.
