We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexisa Humphrey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexisa, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
While many individuals book travel online now, I found it hard starting out to get clients. I took to other avenues such as an app called Thumbtack to get my first client. She and her significant other were very busy professionals and needed someone to plan their trip to Thailand. I was overjoyed to work with them. It was a very unique trip because they didn’t want your standard tour options. I built a custom itinerary from Bangkok to Koh Samui stopping in several locations and booking excursions in each location. It was challenging, but very rewarding
Alexisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an avid traveler (retired military) turned travel advisor. I arrange travel for all types of vacations from family reunions to staycations to weddings. There is no limit when it comes to the travel industry. Every advisor brings unique experiences to the field. While I book mainly Asia and Caribbean, I rarely book Europe. Europe is not high on my list. I love booking Greece and Italy but not the UK. I can’t explain it, it’s not my biggest interest while another advisor may be well versed in Europe but not Asia. I want everyone to know, I’m very passionate about what I do and hope you can see the value and expertise in what I bring to the table.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I worked my way up in the military and was known for being caring, honest and hardworking. That is why I have many prior military clients working with me.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that although I’m a business owner, I’m not available 24/7. While this is different when clients are traveling, I had to let set boundaries so I don’t burn myself out in the industry. I stick to my set office hours and days off to ensure I have time for my family.
