Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Wood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alexis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?

I was able to scale my business up pretty quickly by using rangeme.com they are a company they allow you to directly apply with various retailers who are looking to increase their vendors and inventory options. I utilize the platform was able to get my skincare line in a online store in New Jersey as well as on walmart.com in the past. I have also applied for incubator programs with ShopRite and was able to do 3 pop up shops at 3 different locations throughout the Philadelphia area. Currently we are partnering with an online marketplace called Awa, who will be selling a selective catalog of our products. I believe that both of those opportunities helped increase my exposure and brought about brand awareness. My brand is still a work in progress, but i definitely have increased my online sales though those outlets.

Alexis’s goal was to create spa quality, natural skin care, hair care and beard care products that are not only affordable, but accessible by the general public. As A teen Alexis suffered with dry patches from eczema, acne, and dull looking skin.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

One lesson I had to unlearn is to not rush the process. Everyone wants to see immediate results, when first starting a business. We want the money to come flowing in, almost immediately. Things do not happen that way. we have our bad days as a business and we have our good days. each day we try to be grateful, learn from our mistakes and continue to provide the best products for our customers as possible.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?

When funding Impeccable Melanin, I used business credit cards and net 30 vendor accounts. I utilized those two options, simply to avoid upfront cost and to also help build by business credit.
