We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexis Wood a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Hairstyling didn’t get super personal to me until I had my first baby. I had a really traumatic labor and delivery with her that caused me to have severe postpartum depression. The first few months of her life I stayed in doors and battled with crippling anxiety. I let myself go and threw any and all self care out of the window. I remember just feeling lost in my new role as “mom” and constantly questioning myself.
It took a lot of time, professional help and some self love to get back on track. Looking back, I wish I would have taken steps to give myself some sort of self care along the way. I never want to go back to that dark place I was in and believe that I have the ability to help all kinds of people who need a reminder of how great they are, too.
Through the years I have been able to help my clients through good and bad times and am so thankful I get to have a small part in their journey. I love being able to help new moms gain their confidence back…Teaching my teen clients how to style and take care of their hair…. Just being able to help people see how beautiful they truly are is why im obsessed with what I do.

Alexis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
From a young age I have always been interested in the beauty industry. I begged my parents to let me go to cosmetology school and I am so glad they did. I graduated from the Aveda Institute in Denver Colorado with a full cosmetology license. After graduating I worked as an apprentice at a large salon in Fort Collins for a little over a year before being promoted. Fast forward to today, I am located inside Stellah Salon in Loveland Colorado working as an independent stylist.
I specialize in balayage and lived in color techniques. As a mom, I know how hard it can be to take time away for yourself let alone come to the salon on a regular basis. My goal is to give my clients amazing color that also has longevity. I truly focus on each of my clients as individuals and give them the color/style that best fits their lifestyle. Hair is not one size fits all and I am really proud of how I can customize my application or technique based on their needs. I am in love with what I do, and the amazing people it has brought to my life.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Referrals! I would say 80% of my clientele are people that have been referred to me through their friends/family. I get to meet so many awesome people on a daily basis and I love when they turn around and send someone just like them my way.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to be independent, create your own narrative and success story. As an artist, your success really depends on you and how willing you are to put your all into yourself and your career. I am where I am today because of my passion and thats something I’m really proud of myself for. I wrote my own story and I think thats pretty powerful.
