We recently connected with Alexis Wolfe and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My creative writing skills evolved from reading and journaling. My performance skills evolved from reciting speeches in church. Rhyme is secondary. If I would have understood that sooner it would’ve sped up my process. Also, the ability to write creatively is a muscle. It needs to be exercised. Journal prompts, taking random words and making a story out of them are some exercises to strengthen it. Understanding creative writing as a muscle is most essential. The main obstacles that stood in my way of learning more came from me trying to be loyal to people that I had outgrown in my art. My loyalty kept me stagnant and blurred my optics of how far I could really go with poetry and writing.
Alexis , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was stationed at Fort Campbell in Clarksville, TN and I used to travel to the city of Nashville on the weekends in search of open mics. I began to adopt consistency and became known on the poetry scene. I began to get better and became known for my bars and performance which increased my optics to rappers and producers. Before I knew it I was in studio sessions with artist writing for them! My performance and aesthetic sets me apart. There is a traditional flow that is expected of me as a poet, I don’t honor that at all. I perform from the crowd, barefoot, I don’t use mics unless it’s a large auditorium. My style is unorthodox.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene and the Way of the Wolf by Jordan Belfort. The two books were pinnacle and really got me to think of myself as an entity in relation to business. The Power of Now by Eckart Tolle influenced my philosophy and introduced me to serenity to come into oneness.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to trail-blaze a path for poetry and create a mainstream presence for it. Poetry is an art form that is overlooked but necessary to any artistic renaissance. I feel that poets are not considered, properly represented or compensated. So in addition to leaving behind intellectual property to survive me, I’d like to establish a presence with poetry so poets coming after me have it easier.
