We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
The most important lesson/experience I had in a job that has helped me in my professional career is the art of Hospitality. For most of my professional career while in college I was always drawn to the service field. During my time in the service field I have had to learn to deal with many personalities to say the least. But what I learned was that everyone has a need they are wanting filled. Of coarse, I am no robot but I had a heart to serve in any way I could to make their experience with me the best. Why? Because it is literally in my nature and being to love others despite the way they may treat me. Not easy by any means but the principle is character. From years of experience in this field I recognize that hospitality was a gift that comes from within.
Alexis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a little girl, I would come home to uplifting music and my mom burning candles with the scent of gardenia, primrose, or a fall harvest, and immediately I would feel a sense of warmth and comfort. Little did I know, science has proven a connection between scents, endorphins in the brain, and nostalgia. In other words, smells or scents can spark emotions attached to our life experiences.
While pursuing my college degree, I found myself drawn to my passion for helping others to connect to their inner selves. Which of course, in a deeper way, is connected to our sense of purpose. So I bought a candle making kit and played around with the idea then left it alone. Years later, after a traumatic event, I felt a strong calling to start my candle business back up. This was one of the darkest seasons of my life. It was scary and uncomfortable. I left my full-time job and decided to stay home with my 1-year-old son to heal from said event. I knew with all that was in me that my story was not over. I was to serve a greater purpose. In the midst of this journey, the only thing I could do was to trust that this was what God wanted me to do. I took a financial risk that could possibly affect my family’s future. I was trusting that God would provide and that was where he wanted me. While my faith was put to the test, I found my confidence! It may seem unorthodox that I would find my confidence while jumping into something that can feel so overwhelming and oftentimes, especially in the beginning, insignificant and unseen. But God met me there and began to teach me my WORTH. Not because I was doing everything perfectly, but because I came as I was. As I was creating, words like “Grace, Peace, Joy, Bold” would come to me when I would create a particular scent. When I finished the products, I stood back and looked at them with tears in my eyes. It was tears of joy that the truth was being spoken back to me. With this encounter, I made it my driving force that every home needed Light and Truth. I found that so many times we believe that we are what has happened to us or we are the words that were spoken over us. Replacing those lies with truth is the heart of the brand. We are a home and lifestyle brand that creates purpose-filled products to encourage and uplift others through their experience.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Last year was probably one of the most difficult season of my adult life, especially while raising two little boys, running a business and being a wife. I thought I knew what being a great wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and entrepreneur looked like. Some of my identity was wrapped up in people, performance and things. In the midst God spoke very clearly to me. TAKE CARE OF HOME FIRST! That meant, what I allowed in it physically, mentally and spiritually all mattered to God. I noticed when I actually took charge of my mind and made more thoughtful decisions, things began to shift. The way I cared for my physical home changed. The way I cared for myself changed. The way I cared for my family changed. I noticed God was REDEFINING me. In this process I grieved over what I thought I WANTED & realized this is exactly what I NEEDED. God wanted the AUTHENTIC ALEXIS. Which meant I had to face things I shoved under the rug head on with His help. He wanted all of me so that He could heal me. And in that, my family gets the healed me. The healed me is showing a different way of living for my children & my children’s children, because a healed home is a healed society.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back I wouldn’t change anything because I believe each season In my professions have served a purpose.
