We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career.
I would change how students are taught starting from elementary school. Educators, caregivers, and parents should be asking our students what they would like to be when they grow up and also helping them understand what it takes to get there. For example if a child says that they would like to be a teacher when they grow up then they need to understand the importance of going to college in order to pursue their dream of becoming a teacher. However, if a child says that they would like to become a business owner then is college really needed? Maby not; but the child would need to know the steps to take to become a business owner. Life and college prep classes combined would be ideal. I remember when I was in high school I was told that I needed to go straight to college even if I was undecided on what I wanted my career to be. Thankfully I’ve always know that I wanted to work with children which required me to obtain higher education however, Many of my peers choose their major as undecided entering into college. Many wasted thousands of dollars in student loan debt after finding their purpose which didn’t require an education. Talking to our students and helping them find their purpose early on will prepare our students for a more fulfilling life/career.

Alexis , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey guys! My name is Alexis Williams and I am the author of How To Get Through College And What I Wish Someone Told Me! One day I was sitting with my friend from college and we were reminiscing on our college days, parties, struggles with getting classes, etc. and I was like hmm I should write a book about how to get through college so that students can have a sense of guidance and preparation that I didn’t have. I then started writing a paragraph a week until all of my thoughts became a book! Throughout my book I share my experiences and what I wish I knew about choosing the right college, dorm life, when financial aids hits, peer pressure, tutoring and office hours, and so much more. My book is intended to motivate, encourage, and inspire anyone intending to go back to college, or begin college. It also holds the purpose to ensure current college students graduate college, high school students attend college, empower individuals to follow their dreams and pursue finding their purpose, drive, and vision.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I remember when I was writing my book I had the fear of failing and worrying about other people opinions. Someone once told me. “No one is going to want to read that”. At times I did get discouraged however, I did not let my fears or other people opinions stop me from writing and publishing my book because I know that I will be helping someone who is in need of guidance.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes! My goal while writing my book was never stuck on the money aspect of my book. Of course I would like to be getting paid consecutively right who wouldn’t! However, my mission was much greater. When students, educators, parents, etc read my book I want them to be like “I needed that motivation!” Or “ that book helped me!” There will be millions of individuals going to college every single year, millions of high school students graduating every year. I wanted to provide a book that will forever be needed And useful.
