We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Warr recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alexis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My dear grandma passed away this last summer. She was like a second mom to me and loosing her was a pain that I’ve never felt before. She would call me her “Little Dancing Doll” ever since I was a young girl and had a lullaby to go with it that she’d sing to me from 0-23 years old. She was a big support throughout my dance career and one of my biggest cheerleaders. I love listening to the voicemails that she left me. Usually when a hard event happens I like to go to the studio and dance it out. When I enter the studio it’s like I go into a different world free of judgement of doubt and it feels nice to let go. It’s like my therapy. To cope and pay my respects to her influence in my life, I had this idea of creating a tribute dedicated to my grandma with what I do best, dancing, I created a concept video that showed what that process is to me and included her voicemails and the last dress I saw her /hugged her in. It was very personal and intimate which was nice and different than any tv show, tour, or big project I’ve done. It was raw and felt so special to create and bring my vision/reality to life, and in the end, show my love for her knowing that I’ll always be her little dancing doll.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a professional dancer best knows for being the first female ballroom dancer to win the show So You Think You Can Dance. I’ve also been a pro/troupe on Dancing With The Stars as well as on their past 2 tours. I’ve appeared on World Of Dance and America’s Got Talent. I grew up training in all styles and fell in love with Ballroom and Contemporary. I’ve worked with Derek Hough on tours, Vegas residency, and other projects. I’ve also toured with Maks and Val as their partner on their “Stripped Down” tour. I moved to LA with my husband about a year ago and it’s been such an adventure. Besides a dancer I’m also a teacher/choreographer and choreograph on different studios worldwide. I recently choreographed a halftime routine on the Golden State Warriors Dance Team. I love learning new things and exploring outside my comfort zone because there’s no comfort in your growing zone and no growing in your comfort zone.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’m so grateful to have done all that I have so far in my dance career, and I still have many more goals and dreams, but with that I’ve also dealt with a lot of no’s, a lot of times where I didn’t book the job, times where I’ve severely struggled with self doubt. I’ve had to learn to push through those and learn to trust the process. Many of my no’s lead me to my success’s. There were many times where I’ve wanted to give up, but pushing through has blessed me with greater things I couldn’t even imagine. It’s so important to never give up on your dream and never give up on yourself.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
What drives me is to see what all I can unlock and become. To better myself and keep growing. I love versatility. My goals are to learn and understand many things. The beauty of this industry is that there’s so much variety, and I love immersing myself in that. The unknown can be very scary, but can also be so special.
