We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alexis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Growing up, I’ve always loved music. I started my journey singing in church and talent shows like many other artists have as well and I was never afraid of the crowd; I’d say it’s always kept me energized honestly. When my family and I moved to Texas, my mother put me in an acting conservatory in Dallas around the age of 7 and I absolutely loved it, so I went on to attend a fine arts academy in middle school through my freshman year and that is when I realized I wanted to truly pursue being a vocalist professionally. I love the music profession because not only is singing one of my dearest passions but it’s a gift from God that I feel like I was chosen to express at a young age. Being African American, as well as female, can be so hard already, especially in such a competitive industry like Entertainment.. but I choose to do it with effort because it’s my heart and soul and I was made to shine my light and be a role model/inspiration for future generations after me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Alexis Walker but I go by Lexi Gabrielle and I’m Detroit bred and Dallas raised. As a young artist, I want to be able to bring the R&B/Soul genre in a new wave for my generation to appreciate it a bit more. I focus on diving deep into my lyrics and making them hit home, not only for my age group but for everyone who just loves some good music for the soul! In 5-10 years, I see myself graduated from college, owning my very own entertainment company where not only my clients are being managed and reaching their creative goals whether it’s music, film, producing or directing but also having a multitalented group of individuals who believe in me reaching my goals as we can grow together to help our community. I see myself thriving as a business woman with her masters degree and an artist with several creative backgrounds. Additionally, I want to use my artistry as a platform for outreach to help young artists just like me build their own businesses and become self sufficient in a corporate setting. I want to have Oscar nominated films that come from my production studio. As well as all of this, I want people to know that even though I deal with Type 1 diabetes everyday of my life my disease doesn’t define me or stop me from living up to my true potential every time I wake up in the morning. I want people to know that I am not a statistic and I am just as hard working as them and even more dedicated to my craft and creating beautiful works of art as I learn and better myself. Knowing what I deal with on a day to day motivates me even MORE than other people may know because our time is limited here on this earth , so I definitely take advantage of every opportunity that I am granted whether it’s big or small, I appreciate every moment and continue to live out my dreams to the fullest. In the music world, I believe I haven’t even seen my own potential yet. I know I’m a beast at what I do and I bring so much life and new sound every time I record through the mic. I’m hungry for more ideas and I enjoy seeking new ways to find my true voice and experience my sound to manifest to my audiences. As long as I’ve been living on this earth, I’ve been told that my voice is a healing component and that just motivates me even more to keep grinding and showing people who I am as a young artist just doing what she loves to do everyday and that’s what I’m MOST proud of.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Being an optimist, I always look at life as an opportunity to continue to make a change or difference every day you are still able to. I believe in order to live a happy, successful life, you have to put the excuses down and pick up the results. As of January 7th, 2020, I have fought Type 1 diabetes every day but I never use it as an excuse for why I am not following my dreams and achieving my goals. As they say, ” you only live once,” and I choose to work hard every chance I get to be where I am destined. I may be a little different than other young people but I don’t let my disease stop me. I look at it as not only an honor but as an accomplishment that I can show young people all around the world who may be going through the same thing as me, that living your life to the fullest is always the best option. When those doctors say no, you push through because there is always a miracle waiting. My disease makes me more cautious but it doesn’t make me live in fear. I’ve learned that your dreams don’t wait for you; you have to go out and chase them, and that’s what I am willing to do to become my own success story, conquering my dreams AND my health one step at a time.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe the best part about being a creative is getting the chance to witness your own growth and potential along the way. Personally, I’ve experienced solving problems very easily with my innovative mindset and learning business skills for my future endeavors. To me, the only reward is the joy of creativity speaking for itself in the end. “Creativity is in the creation.”
