Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Rae. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have always known deep down that I wanted to pursue a creative path for as long as I can remember, honestly! I was just too scared and insecure to do it. I would always daydream of being on stage, being in movies, and would always write poetry, make up songs, and create characters in my head as well. It was always in me. After studying Advertising in college and graduating, the acting bug hit me again. I did a few projects, sang by myself a ton, and then dove back into my full-time job. Once I moved to LA, I decided to pursue it fully and never looked back.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Alexis and I am an actress and singer/songwriter. My music persona is BLKsiren- I’d say it’s alternative rock/pop/soul/psychedelic but I love all types of music. I see people as characters and I see myself as a storyteller- I write about relationships, my anxiety, the pain of growing up, heartbreak and breaking hearts- just everything. For music, I started singing in jams around LA , writing about everything I was feeling, and making a ton of musician friends. I would also watch a lot of youtube videos on singing, producing, stage performances, and writing to get better and read all I could as well
As far as acting, once I moved to LA I started dating an actor and he was super helpful in getting me started. Getting headshots, taking classes, showing me where to network. I always studied and watched movies very closely but I started to watch even more and really get in the head of the character. The relationship luckily didn’t last but I’m grateful for all the wisdom he shared with me!
I am most proud of the music I am writing and working on getting produced now as I feel it is truly “me”. I have done a few commercials but I am a recurring character on an upcoming comedy sketch show coming out called “UNSERIOUS” that I am super proud of. Funny story is that I almost didn’t audition (boo, fear!) because I wasn’t technically a comedian but I’ve always loved comedy- so I did it anyway.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Honestly, Just getting to express myself and share it with the world. If I can cause someone to laugh, have a good time, express and release some rage, feel something then I feel happy. If I am hurt or betrayed I like to put it down on paper, write about it, and put it into a song. I like to come up with cool metaphors and lyrics that encapsulate what I’m feeling
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Go out and support new artists by going to their shows, paying for their merch/songs, resharing, and sharing their posts and music! This is huge- social media is a necessary “evil” in marketing when it comes to artists. It is draining and repetitive at times but having others support in getting your music and content out can help the next person discover us.
