We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexis Peralta a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis, thanks for joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Early in my career, when I worked for a state agency, they were launching a new initiative to incorporate business elements such as project management and Lean Six Sigma methodologies to enhance operations and processes, ultimately improving the customer experience.
One of the key takeaways I still hold onto today is not to be afraid of failure. We were taught that problems are gold because they present opportunities for improvement. That lesson helped me reframe failure in a different light.
I know there are countless quotes about not fearing failure, but applying this mindset in real-world situations made it truly resonate with me. As they say, life is too short, and failing to invest time and effort into pursuing your dreams only does you a disservice. Whenever I fail at something, I always reflect on how I could have done better—so I can improve in the future.
Alexis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Alexis Peralta, and I am a Project Manager in the nonprofit industry by day while building a Project Management and Creative Services business, along with an art shop, on the side. I am also a wife, mother, and proud cat lady who loves playing video games. My journey into business ownership was inspired by a colleague and mentor from my time as a public servant, but I have been an artist for as long as I’ve been alive!
AP Specialties LLC provides Project Management and Creative Services to clients looking to launch innovative initiatives, improve business operations, scale up, or start a new business. Additionally, I offer more hands-on creative services, such as commissioned artwork.
I ensure that clients of AP Specialties LLC receive a unique experience—one that only a creative mind with a logical approach can provide. Business operations, data analysis, dashboard building, and network diagramming are all highly technical tasks, and they often look just as complex. Explaining or presenting these technical concepts to a non-technical audience can be challenging—information may not resonate, details can get lost in translation, and engagement may suffer.
That’s where my creative side comes into play. I transform technical aspects into visually engaging, easy-to-understand experiences, making complex information more accessible to non-technical clients.
I take great pride in my ability to stay on task and organized, even as someone with ADHD. My focus is driven by passion—passion for my business, integrity, quality of work, and my ability to blend creativity with logic. Clients of AP Specialties LLC can trust that their projects will receive my full attention and dedication.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Looking back, one thing I wish I had taken advantage of earlier in my career is enrolling in more college courses while I was in university. Today, people pay for online courses to learn things I could have studied in high school or college. For example, I wish I had taken an art class every year in high school to further develop my skills.
Social media is another area where I wish I had had a different mindset. I used to spend hours doomscrolling, only to realize it was wasted time I could never get back. Eventually, I stepped away from it altogether. In hindsight, I wish I had recognized its potential for simple business marketing earlier—I would have had a stronger foundation to build on now.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Beyond fulfilling my childhood dream of becoming a famous artist, I now have an even greater motivation—to set an example for my children. I want them to see not just their mother, but someone who inspires them to work hard, pursue their dreams, and never let anything stand in their way.
I grew up in poverty with a single mother doing her best on her own. At times, we were homeless—living with family, staying with friends, and even living out of a motel. That experience taught me invaluable lessons and shaped my determination to build a stable home for my own children. My goal has always been to ensure we never have to go back to that uncertainty.
I hope that the drive and ambition that push me forward will carry on to the next generation—serving as a foundation they can build upon and improve through their own life experiences.
