Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Nicholas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexis, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Because we are a military family, we’ve moved cross country twice in 6 years. Because a makeup artist is great because I can obviously work anywhere in the world. But owning your own business means establishing and re-establishing an entire new clientele every time we move. I could do the easy thing and just work for an already established makeup team. But each time, I’ve taken the risk to re-build from the ground up. And I’ll do it wherever we move next. Growth is such an amazing thing, and the risk is definitely worth the reward in this case.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a makeup artist specializing in luxury bridal makeup, destination weddings, and makeup lessons. I finished Esthetician school 8 years ago and quickly jumped into doing makeup full time. I offer makeup lessons in person, and on zoom, for one person and larger groups. I help you step into a routine of doing your makeup with products and tools you may already have. My makeup style is more of an enhancement of your natural features, while staying very pretty and soft. You won’t find me doing bright colors or anything too harsh. My ability to listen to my client on what they want to achieve, and fully execute their vision while putting my creative spin on it is what sets me apart from other makeup artists. I’m most proud of my growth. I’ve learned so much in the last 8 years, and continue to learn new techniques every day. My main focus is making my client look and feel the most beautiful, radiant version of themselves.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy has absolutely been showing up as my most authentic self and producing my best work every time I have a client in my chair. Making my clients feel seen and heard, giving them what they want but also enhancing their vision with my interpretation of it. I’m confident in my skill set now, and that shows through my work. When clients love their experience with me, they tell their friends, family, coworkers, social media followers! Word of mouth is what has helped me get to this stage in my career.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media can feel like a full time job sometimes but it’s such an incredible tool for small businesses. Moving from Ohio to Southern California to Virginia has built my social media to where it is. I have connections all across the country now, which is so amazing and helpful. I started by following tons of industry vendors, and then engaging with them to boost my own engagement in their area. Months before I moved, I changed my hashtags, my locations, everything. I reached out to influencers, bloggers, celebrities, telling them I’m moving to their area and would LOVE to do their makeup for free so we could connect. The more you engage on social media, the more your content is shown and the further your reach. Everything is content these days, you just have to post it.
