We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexis Nettles. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexis below.
Hi Alexis, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
I used to toy with the idea of what it would be like if I started creating content sooner, but now that I’m older, I realize I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m very grateful to have matured a bit more as a person before allowing the internet to play such a huge role of my life. That’s not to say it’s bad to start young (there are some incredibly talented, young creators out there!), it’s just to say that there is a lot that comes with being perceived on the internet, and I’m personally glad I wasn’t doing what I’m doing now in my teenage years.

Alexis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I first got into Content Creation when I was 20 years old (if you don’t count the iMovie videos I used to make with my friends and post to my Facebook wall at 11, that is). That’s when I started my YouTube channel and created a new Instagram account as @lexiluxury.
I was a chronic beauty-tutorial enthusiast and was so inspired by the woman I watched on YouTube. I thought to myself “a lot of people already ask me for beauty tips, and I love being on camera as well as editing videos, so why not try this thing out?” I also have to shoutout my mom for putting the bug in my ear; she was the first person to tell me to start a YouTube channel and I don’t know if I would’ve started so soon if she didn’t!
It’s now been eight years since I started my YouTube Channel, and although my content has evolved, my niche has pretty much stayed the same. I create beauty, fashion and lifestyle content for anyone wanting to look and feel like the most confident version of themselves. Ultimately, I aim to be a reliable resource for my audience, whether that’s tips for decluttering your home, outfit ideas or finding the perfect lip combo!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Quality is always better than quantity. People consume content quicker than ever before, and is a lot of pressure to produce insane amounts of content on a daily basis. I recently fell victim to this pressure (as we all often do) and totally fell out of love with the content I was creating. It got to a point where I was having a serious creative rut and my engagement was tanking. Once I realized that trying to post constantly was actually hurting my business rather than helping it, I took a step back and focused on content I genuinely wanted to make. With that, came more views, better ideas and a much more sustainable strategy.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My best advice for anyone wanting to build an audience is to first identify who your “dream audience” is; think about their interests, who they are, etc. Then, think of the type of person that attracts these people. Become that person and create content they would create!
