We recently connected with Alexis Marrero and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
It may sound cliche, but I’ve always been passionate about music. At a young age, I knew I wanted to be a singer and would sing all around the house for everyone. I began to write little songs and sing with friends at the age of 12 and at 15 years old, I taught myself to play the ukulele. We were on a family vacation, and I begged my mom to get one for me. So she decided to buy me one, and I started teaching myself “Riptide” by Vance Joy right in the hotel lobby. After holding that ukulele in my hands, my passion for music went to the next level. By the time I was 16 years old, I had started writing music, and my career was born from there!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 23-year-old, pop-rock singer/songwriter from Cleveland, Ohio. I started my career at 16 years old on Instagram where a talent scout had seen my cover of “Titanium” and the rest is history! Over the years, I traveled the country on Boys of Summer Tour 2021 and 2022 as well as performed at Playlist Live in 2022. This past year, I popped by “On With Mario Lopez,” performed at Riptide Music Festival, partnered up with FANCLB to create an exclusive fan club of my own to connect with my fans more, and so much more! The thing that I love about being an artist is really connecting with my listeners through my music. I am a big storyteller in my lyrics and love to tell stories that my listeners can relate to. Starting as a pop artist long ago, this past year I found myself falling back in love with rock and roll. This allowed me to find myself as an artist and blend my two favorite genres. I truly am proud of the journey I’ve been on thus far, and I can’t wait for the people to hear my new sound. You can hear that new sound in my brand new single “Tears Come Fallin’ Down” out now!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is when someone tells me my music had an impact on them, especially in times of need! Ever since I started my career, my lyrics have always been deep, sometimes even dark. I find that music is a great outlet and has always been one for me. I took to writing stories from my life and the people around me that others could relate to. Even if we don’t share the same story, I hope listeners can paint their own picture in my music and relate their own story to my lyrics. I’ve always found it important to write what people can relate to and find themselves in. When people tell me that my song helped them or that they really related to it, that is the most rewarding feeling for me.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are definitely a lot of resources I wish I had known about earlier in my career, but the biggest resource I was missing was a vocal coach. For most of my career, I was a self-taught musician. While I’m proud of the strides I had made pre-training, I was missing out on all the power and potential my voice had to offer. Now vocal lessons are one of my favorite parts of the week, and I’m growing stronger and stronger with each lesson! As a singer, vocal lessons are so important for so many reasons, and I’m grateful to be able to take them from my amazing coach Asunta!
