Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Long-Daniels. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexis , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
When I first started out in my field, it was difficult to find an agency that was willing to take on a new therapist. Once I completed my internship, I knew that I wanted to work with children and families so I began looking for positions with that as the focus. Connection was also very important in this process. I sought out many people that I knew in the field to determine if some how they could assist me with landing a position. Thank God for connections. A sorority sister of mine who I’ve known quite some time worked at a substance use facility and had an open position for a child and family therapist in their residential facility for pregnant women who had a history of chemical dependence. I began working with her and her team soon after applying for the position. During my job search I was scared but also hopeful and determined to find something that was in my area of interest. I consider myself a pretty resourceful person so I utilized that strength when seeking people out to support me on my search for a position that fit best. My first position in the field taught me so much and I believe that it made me an even more well-rounded therapist with a diverse background of experiences related to the populations I’ve worked with.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Since high school, I knew that I wanted to work in a field related to psychology but once I got to college, I began having even more experiences that led me to personally start going to therapy. Once I graduated, I knew that I also wanted to be a therapist and help others the way my therapist had begun to help me work through hard life experiences. I am an Associate Licensed Counselor, National Board Certified Counselor, Certified Trauma Professional, and Certified Tele-Mental Health Provider. I am also currently a 3rd year doctoral student pursuing my Phd in Community Health and Human Studies. I currently own a private practiced, Worth the Wellness Counseling which is an entity of my business Worth the Wellness Enterprises LLC. I work with adults, children, and families to tackle the hard things while also helping them to becoming more community and self aware. I help clients work through issues related to stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideations, relationships, and behavior challenges, to name a few. What stands out about my organization is that we are highly committed and focused on starting early with helping guide children and their families in making trauma informed, conscious decisions in order to assist in significantly reducing the development of ACEs and helping them to reach their most full potential. I am most proud of my ability to take a leap of faith while utilizing my passion of helping others and underserved communities to start a private practice that I hope to continue to grow and expand to help many people in various communities.

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back, I would choose the same profession but I would also add becoming a psychiatrist. I have a passion for research and playing an integral role in the improvement of communities. I believe that along with my background in therapy, becoming a psychiatrist would give me even more tools and accessibility to evaluations and information that could lead research related to underserved communities.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been connection and networking. While this is an area I am still growing in, being prepared with my virtual and hard copy business cards when I go places as well as stepping out of my comfort zone and networking when I attend events has made the world of difference with increasing my clients list. Even when its uncomfortable, step out and make the connection or have the conversation. Your business and reputation will thank you.
