We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Krcelic recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
Truthfully I don’t care what people say about me as a person. I do, however care how I made them feel. I care how basta. made them feel and what part it played in their lives. It may seem silly that a bakery would even play a role in anyone’s life but I think it has. We have been a part of so many big and small moments for people over the years and I hope to connote to help them celebrate life through food. I hope to be remembered for bringing people together, making them feel seen, and spreading joy through food.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Alexis Krcelic and I’m the owner of basta. (aka basta. bakery). We’re an all vegan bakery in Greenville, SC specializing in what we call dirty desserts. Our goal is to save the world with dessert. While that may not be actually possible, we have made a difference in our community and people’s lives and that means more than anything. I’m most proud of the impact we’ve had in people’s lives. We have been able to create a safe place for people to eat and come visit. Not only safe with their dietary restrictions but also with their full and complete true selves.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I think the most effective strategy has been creating new and creative menu offerings that people cannot typically find anywhere else. We also expanded in to other dietary options and people have responded so well to those options that are not only safe for them to eat but also delicious.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
One of my favorite things about having my own business is that the brand is me. It is the exact embodiment of who I am just in bakery form. With that, people have loved the authenticity, that they get to see the other side of owning a business, and they feel an active part of what we are creating. People have naturally been attracted to that and they feel heard by us.
