We recently connected with Alexis Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alexis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
The craziest story that relates to me as a small business owner also relates to finding the right mentor. This is One thing that a lot of business owners encounter is becoming educated and we usually try to find education through those that are more experienced. One of my craziest Experience is came by way of having a mentor. Because I always want to get better at all aspects and of my business. I found a mentor through an accelerated group. My mentor was experienced in finance and up scaling Businesses. I was very excited to have someone help me take on the responsibility of Helping my business flourish. What I came to realize after many weeks of conversation was that my mentor was not confident in my business. During this time I began to look into wholesale. My mentor told me I was not ready flat out told me no.
I had done weeks of research and found many leads.
Even though I take Directions well ask questions and follow through, The lack of confidence my mentor had for my business eventually began to affect the confidence they had for me.
My mentor didn’t need to be Confident in my business or my ability. They need to guide me. They needed to let me fail OR Achieve.
So what did I do I went ahead and began to wholesale. Because one thing about it you’re not gonna tell me NO!
Finding a mentor that was not right for me gave me confidence to move forward in a world where other people do not have that same confidence.
That mentorship was in 2017 I began to wholesale that was very next year. And I have remained a partner with Sipsby until this day.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
What motivates me about my business is a letter a wrote when I was in the 4th grade. The letter was to my future self about having a restaurant and being Oprah’s personal chef. Now, I don’t have a restaurant or cook family meals for Oprah. But, I do have a business. TheTéSpa, is the business I never knew I would have back in the 4th grade. I didn’t know a simple garden, that was planted in Mattapan for my mother on Mother’s Day would grow into what I have today. Being able to sell 8 different delicious loose leaf tea has been an amazing journey. form long term pop ups in Boston’s Seaport to having Té classes.I I have learned so much about the tea industry and what health means to my customers.
TheTéSpa is an immersive experience for lovers of everything tea. Our one-of-a-kind herbal Té blends are designed to maximize the potential of each herb, making you feel and look like a new you.
Fourth grade me would be incredibly proud that she has a business that she shares with her community and her daughters.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Every day is a story of Of my resiliency. There was a time that I was homeess and a single mom of 2 young daughters. I was in college for my degree in psychology,.working in education homeless and i couldn’t make enss meet. I remember being at the grocery store all of my cards declining and the person in front of me was kind enough to pay for the snacks I was trying to get for the girls. I never wanted my daughters to go without because of decisions I made or decisions other people made that affected our lives.
I never really talk about that period of time in my life. I didn’t ask for help because it was incredibly embarrassing, I didn’t want to answer questions, I didnt feel supported or loved. But I also knew this time, homeless and struggling wouldn’t last forever.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clientele are TheTéSpa Unique Té making classes. Té making classes started in 2022 at the Current in Boston Seaport a, 6 week pop up experience. I created this opportunity for customer to get to know me, and how hilarious I am but also get to know TheTéSpa, our mission, story, and an amazing array of herbs that they create into their own Té blend. This time is spent tasting Té and creating space for self care to be a part of customer daily lives.
