SubscribeWe caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexis Hicks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alexis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When I started my business, I had finally gotten the confidence to show up as a solo entity after winning popular food competitions. I worked in the industry from the moment I started culinary school until 2020 when I called it quits. I knew I could no longer work under someone, my goals and views around food had significantly changed due to personal health battles and I felt so disconnected from what I actually went to school for. Zero Manipulation was supposed to be a food experience from around the world. I am from Prince George’s County, Maryland, a suburb right outside of Washington, D.C. I grew up eating JUNK honestly, thankfully my mother has southern roots so for 90% of dinners we had either cabbage or collard greens with rice and either chicken or pork chops for dinner. Outside of my mother’s cooking my siblings and I ate carryout, pizzas, subs, wings or fast food. There wasn’t a health-conscious food store in sight, ONLY bad foods were available in our community. Prince George’s County is one of the wealthiest Black counties in America and yet we have the worst food options I’ve ever seen. I noticed the impact of my poor food choices very early and also my ignorance to other cultures cuisines. Over the past 6 years I’ve dedicated my business not only to displaying cultural foods in an approachable manner but to teach and serve my community healthy AND tasty meals. ZM provides an exceptional trip around the globe but also teaches the community how to eat to live a balanced healthy life. My contribution to my community is to teach people of all ages about making better food choices, food safety, learning how to cook and to slowly venture out to expand your palette! We are the best of both worlds!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Alexis Hicks, I am originally from Prince George’s County, Maryland. I’ve lived and cooked in multiple cities throughout my career and Zero Manipulation Catering is a Black Woman owned business that has been in existence since 2017. We originated in Atlanta, GA.Not only am I a private Chef and caterer but I am also a social media food and lifestyle creator.
While in high school I began to really enjoy cooking for not only myself but for my friends and family. I would watch food network endlessly and one day I saw a Le Cordon Bleu commercial come across the screen. I called the number and packed my bags a few months later and began culinary school in Las Vegas, Nevada. After a few years in the industry and competing in multiple culinary competitions successfully, I decided to start my own catering business. Zero Manipulation Catering offers private dining, meal prep, cooking lessons, nutrition coaching and we cater parties of ALL sizes.
The problem we solve for our clients is that we make everything your heart desires! Some clients want to expand their palettes and others want to eat a well-balanced meal each and every day. Having a well-seasoned and versed Chef you get to experience global flavors locally and from a trusted source. The community longed for better food options and after relocating from Atlanta, GA to Washington, D.C. we have single handedly impacted so much of our community by offering better options.
What sets ZM apart is quality, humility and willingness to make necessary changes to give our clients what they desire.
I am proud that my business stood the test of time, I have been a one woman show for 95% of ZM’s existence. I’ve pivoted so much and finally got to see my business consistently grow year after year. My business is self-funded, I took what I had and gave it my ALL. In the pandemic, I took my talents to TikTok to generate traffic to not only gain clients but to teach people how to eat and live better! The pandemic was such a game changer, but I came out victorious! My friends and family call me the pivot queen, when nothing seemed certain I persevered and never gave up! If something didn’t work I found another way.
I would like my new, old and future clients to know I put my heart into everything I do. It is my calling to give you great quality food and service. I would also like to thank my clients who always refer me to their friends and family! My business is booming just off word of mouth alone! I get so many referral calls which lets me know I made a positive and lasting impression, so much so you want your friends or family to also experience excellence!

How did you build your audience on social media?
I started my TikTok at the very beginning of the pandemic and I was so clueless on how to even work it! I am a true ambivert!! I am outgoing for the most part, but social media was a whole different playing field. I was nervous but I just kept showing up! I posted cooking tutorials and telling funny stories alongside step-by-step cooking videos. I built an active audience by getting online every day and being extremely personable but by staying true to who I really am. People can smell a fake a mile away be yourself and show the world what you do best!

Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
My business not only offers physical services but also downloadable recipes my viewers can purchase, nutrition guides, one on one coaching for up-and-coming chefs and my YouTube channel where I post tutorials.
