Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Heisa. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexis, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I’ve always been a creative at heart and photography was one of those mediums I admired from a distance. But it wasn’t until the world shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic that I finally gave myself permission to explore it for real.
I upgraded my camera gear and started photographing my dog, Zeppelin, on our regular walks (which is the one activity that actually brought joy during that time period). He quickly became my muse and the best model as I’d experiment with light, angles, composition, and the list goes on.
At the same time, I was part of an online community for a pet brand that held photography contests. The talent there was incredible and simply…inspiring. My competitive side kicked in, and I became determined to grow my skills to that level. With every new challenge, I stretched myself creatively, and I could see my work evolving in real time. It lit a fire in me. I was completely consumed—in the best possible way. I couldn’t stop thinking about photography.
Every free moment was spent learning, experimenting, and dreaming. And the deeper I fell in love with the craft, the more I started to uncover a whole world I hadn’t known existed: pet photography as a profession. I listened to countless hours of podcasts and dove into educational content specific to pet photography. I soon came to realize that this passion could actually be a sustainable business, one with real purpose. Not just beautiful photos, but meaningful photographic art that honors the deep, unspoken connection between people and their pets. That realization changed everything. I started filing paperwork with the city, had my website built, and laying the foundation for what would eventually become Dog Haus Photography. My background in interior design gave me an added layer of perspective—helping me think not just about capturing beautiful images, but how those images would live in someone’s home as intentional, joyful pieces of art.
And then, one of those serendipitous moments happened: I tuned into a podcast I didn’t normally listen to, where the host is based in Australia, as it was featuring several business coaches sharing tips for the new year. One coach offered a free 20-minute strategy call, and without even Googling her, I signed up. It turned out she lived in San Diego. Even crazier? Just over a mile from me. That call turned into taking a chance and choose to hire her as my first business coach—hands down the best investment I could have made. During our 9 month program, I slowly started to begin marketing and soon enough had my first clients.
Fast forward to today – Dog Haus Photography celebrates the love story between pets and their humans. Our mission is to create an experience that’s just as meaningful as the images themselves. It’s about making our clients feel seen, connected, and completely free to dote on their pets—without judgment. The end result? Tangible, heirloom-quality artwork that captures the heart and soul of their beloved best friend. As the years go by, my hope is that these images continue to bring a smile to their face, spark cherished memories, and a lasting reminder of a love and legacy that live on.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Dog Haus Photography was built on the belief that every pet has a legacy. Our pets are our soulmates, our comic relief, our daily joy—and the relationships we have with them deserve to be honored. I work with clients who don’t just like their pets—they adore them because they are family.
While I’m photographing, I’m not just thinking about the light or composition—I’m thinking about how these images will be lived with. Will they hang on the wall as a statement museum canvas? Will they be revisited often through a custom album? The end result is tangible, lasting artwork that brings joy every time you see it.
The process at Dog Haus Photography is intentionally high-touch. From the pre-session consultation to the photo shoot itself, the design and ordering appointment, and finally, the delivery of their commissioned artwork—I’m involved every step of the way. I want my clients pet(s) to know me, to trust me, and to be excited when we meet for the session. I want the pet parents to feel completely present, relaxed, and able to enjoy the moment. When it’s time to choose their favorite images, I help guide them—not just toward what’s visually stunning, but toward the photographs that they’re emotionally connected with. We believe the most meaningful art is the kind you never stop loving—and what could be more timeless than the pet who made your house feel like home?
In the past year, I was honored to be named Pet Photographer of the Year and awarded Image of the Year by the Professional Photographers of San Diego County. These recognitions reflect the heart I pour into every session and the deep trust my clients place in me to tell their stories.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I’m a big believer in investing in yourself—and that education can come in many forms: podcasts, books, workshops, mentorship, or formal coaching. No matter the format, I think the most important factor when choosing a teacher or coach is trust. Make sure their values, experience, and communication style truly align with your goals. There are a lot of people offering coaching these days, so I suggest making sure they’re equipped to help you get where you want to go.
The second piece is just as critical: take action. If you’re going to invest in education—whether it’s a class or a one-on-one mentorship—commit to doing the work. Show up, implement, and create space for growth.
