We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
My biggest risk so far has been deciding to start my own business. I got out of the army during the height of COVID with no idea what I really wanted to do. It was actually my husband that influenced my career path. I’d thought that I had to go straight to work finding a “sensible” job.
He convinced me to do something that I’m actually passionate about. I got out of the army and when to makeup school in the same year. The industry was already heavily affected by COVID at the time but I knew this was what I wanted to do. My husband put all of his bets on me. He’s supported me not getting a traditional job this entire journey.
Deciding to build a business instead of getting a traditional job was definitely scary. Especially in such an expensive state. I wouldn’t have been able to do without the support of my husband and some of my school instructors.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I focus on creating an all around experience for my clients. From them finding me, to the booking process to the chair. Customer service is a big part of what I do. It’s not just about a beautiful makeup application for me. Makeup artistry is not just a hobby to me and I want that be obvious.
My goal is to leave clients both looking and feeling radiant. I works collaboratively with clients in order to bring their ideal makeup look to life. From glamorous makeovers to natural and glowing. I feel like no matter the occasion everyone deserve to feel like their best self.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
When I first started thumbtack was really helpful for building my clientele. I had no advertising experience and the ads I did run really did no good. I’d say most of my clientele still comes from there. I will say that I am working on building my social media and putting out more content to move away from thumbtack. I’m also working on bettering the SEO for my website so I can bring in more traffic from web searches.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Definitely good customer service and making connections! I’ve had instructors from makeup school bring me on to assist on jobs and refer me for jobs. The same goes with others in the creative industry. Build those connections with your clients and other creatives and your name will be said in rooms that you’ve never even stepped in.
