We recently connected with Alexis Groves and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
It started when I first was involved in a play awhile ago called “Confessions of a Womanizer”. As I was playing the role, I still felt like something was missing. I didn’t have all the answers on how to be an actress . I just put myself out there. I also had the opportunity to be on set of Issa Rae’s Insecure HBO tv show. That is where I learned that it’s more to acting than I think. It’s serious. I just have to search for knowledge to get there. I joined acting classes and read audiobooks, where I learned the foundations and the origin of acting. I appreciate the process of it all. Knowing what I know now. I could have joined acting classes a long time ago and read those books early on because I would be at a farther place from where I am at now. The skills that I think I most essential is the ability to imagine and prepare. I would say the obstacle that I stood in my way of learning more is myself. Acting takes a great deal of confidence and vulnerability.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I would say I’m quite at the industry yet. I’m still in the “school” ear of acting. I have so much more to learn before I can break into the industry. I’m most proud of the person I am now then I was a year ago. My mindset is different and prospective is broader.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is that I get to say how wide is my range and I get to unlock different sides of me that I didn’t know was there.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started out doing comedic skits based of awkward situations along with doing chris brown dance videos. My skits were progressing as I was attending SDSU and using different peers for my skits. Along with that, I started a fun little dance organization called “Teambreezy SDSU” were we would dance to Chris brown in front of people, all for fun. It wasn’t until Chris Brown pointed at me at a concert and followed me on Instagram to where I was beginning to be known around the college campus, that is what made me a familiar face along with my funny skits.
