Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Floyd.
Hi Alexis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved art and the freedom of expression. Throughout my life, I’ve tried many different methods of creativity and entertainment, but it wasn’t until 2020 that I decided to start pursuing photography professionally. At the time, I had hit what I considered “rock bottom” and had nothing to lose. I ruled that going back to school would be the best route to break into this profession, and I enrolled in a master’s program for photography. It has been an incredible journey so far and I have to give proper credit to those who genuinely encourage and support me. They are the reason I have made it this far.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. At the start of my career I wanted to focus on fashion photography but it was hard for me to build a team. I lacked experience and resources, so I was rejected a lot by my peers who were also in this industry. I became extremely independent and relied on my surroundings to build my portfolio. I shifted to street photography and taking portraits of my family members. This avenue was also a battle because I was very shy about taking pictures in public areas without looking suspicious or shady, lol. It was also hard to find family members who were comfortable getting their photo taken. Looking back, I am so grateful for those obstacles because it allowed me to tap deeper into my creativity and appreciate what I have now. My creativity has blossomed since then i’ve become much stronger as an artist. I still face many obstacles on this journey, but I do my best to remain faithful and keep going.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a fashion editorial and portrait photographer, I’ve built a great network of creatives to collaborate and grow with. Through my collaborative projects, I can bring other people’s visions to life, and it’s gratifying. We help each other in many ways, and I’m proud of the work I’ve produced so far. What makes me stand out as a photographer is my energy. I enter every space with a positive attitude and encouraging affirmations. I genuinely enjoy my work, and I believe that energy is present in it. I’m proud of my strength and ability to try new things and take chances. As I get older, my interests change, and so does my work. I’ve been experimenting with fine art and allowing that to guide my next steps. I never put myself in a box and don’t feel I need to. Art is meant to be explored, and I’m not afraid to switch it up when I feel called to. As a creative, my intuition is my guiding force, and I’d be doing myself a great disservice if I ignored that pull within me.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I have a beautiful support system! My parents have always supported my dreams; although they may not always understand my choices, they consistently show up and reassure their love and acceptance. They are a huge blessing, and I can’t wait for the day I shower them with the fruits of my labor. I also have a great community of family and friends who support me; I try my best to have genuine connections with those around me, and I’m always overwhelmed by the help and love I receive. I couldn’t possibly name all the people who have impacted my life and helped me get where I am today, but I hope my actions show how grateful and honored I am now and forever.
