Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Floyd . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
My decision to pursue photography professionally was a huge risk for me. At the time, I had just moved back home and was starting my career from scratch. I always had high expectations for my life, but I needed a clear plan or outline for achieving them. I’m an artist by nature, and working in any field that doesn’t honor my artistry is soul-crushing. It was always that deep to me. I had a decision to make, and the pandemic gave me enough time to think clearly and diligently. I returned to school, got my master’s in photography, and never looked back. Choosing to pursue your passions professionally is always a risk, but that was a risk I had to take. The alternative would have been to settle for a life that didn’t truly fulfill me, and I refused to do that.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Portrait and Fashion Editorial Photographer. I’m close to my family, so my inspiration comes from childhood. I honor them through my work by blending our fashion, music, and art preferences. This has shaped my creative concepts in ways that feel natural and powerful to me. I also like to connect with other creatives and bring their visions to life. Community is the most essential aspect of any endeavor, and supporting and uplifting each other is rewarding. My true purpose is to occupy spaces with creativity, passion, and joy. At this time, cameras are my favorite tool to execute that.
Throughout my career as an artist, I’ve been most proud of my ability to face my fears. Choosing to follow your passions is not an easy road, but the art of showing up every day, no matter what builds character that will benefit you in everything you face in life.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Not necessarily any resources but pieces of advice. One would be how to use lighting to support your concept. Lighting is the most important detail of photography; learning to capture it adequately will take your photos to the next level. Also, to create a lane and own it. Many artists are told what and how they should classify their work, which can hinder the photographer more than it helps. Times have changed, and artists have more free range than ever to follow their paths. Turning down opportunities that don’t align with your vision, style, or morals is okay. Taking those jobs will only slow you down rather than speed you up on the road to your idea of success.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission/ goal is always to be happy. As long as photography keeps me happy (not to be confused for easy, but makes me happy), that is my driving force.
