We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexis Eleniak-Radford. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexis below.
Hi Alexis, thanks for joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
My 1st job in the field of Physical Therapy. I was in my early 30’s, Let me just say, I had no idea that my entire life was forming for my career from the age of 14. This would be my warm welcome to the Health & Wellness World. How I got this 1st job in my field was one of my moms friends, recommended I talk to the Physical Therapist she was currently going to; for a job. I made an appointment with Larry Ho of Ho Rehabilitation. I walked in with training from the Massage School I recently attended. I was Certified, having had Anatomy; Sports Massage; Lymph Drainage; and Swedish Massage. I was also teaching a Kinesiology Class at Cal State Los Angeles. I had an A.A and B.A though not in Kinesiology or Health. Larry Ho looked at my resume and gave me a job offer immediately and I actually said, I’d think about it and left. A few days later, I accepted. I should have done my research, Larry Ho is quite famous in the PT world. I don’t think I had a goal for this job at the time.
Now almost 20 years ago, semi-retired; still affiliated with the company and I still call Larry Ho my (old boss and BEST boss. A mentor, successful businessman; an angel, helping with my struggles and very successful Doctor of Physical Therapy, I can call a friend.
I am happy to be happy taking the road I did. I don’t know what life would be like with a different career or path getting there. All I know is the one I have and the career I created for myself. I know I am not vein, though I do love the way I feel and the way I look.
Alexis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I teach Core Education. This means I teach each person what the actual Core is and how to use it while you breathe; all you need is a chair. Not many people know how to use their back muscles when needed. I give you the expertise you need to contract every single muscle in the Core from your feet. Lower back pain diminishes and muscles begin to strengthen.
I would like to teach every one in this world, though being a Credit Provider, I want to focus on teaching (PMA) Pilates enthusiasts; (NASM and AFAA) Personal Trainers.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My pivot was from Massage to Pilates. Not knowing that Pilates would be my Mainframe and foundation of my Career. My neck injury prevented my from moving. Which prevented me from working. Pilates helps strengthen the Core of the body through detailed exercises. From a 1 year full time education of Pilates made me strong.
Looking back, I had 1 lady, a Physical Therapist that wanted to take my lesson. This is still in 2011/12 during or after graduating my Pilates Certification. (I had no idea what Core was, in detail to the lesson I teach now). Going back to this lady wanting my lesson, ….When it was time for her lesson, she showed up with a pen and paper, instead of exercise clothing on and shoes off.
I was confused? She wanted my entire 1 year of Pilates education and experience as something to write down and pass on. I was shocked and she was mad that she didn’t get the kind of lesson she wanted.
I guess my next Pivot point would be offering this “magic lesson”. As of about 2014, I can honestly give her the best lesson, I actually refer to TripodyourCore as the biggest lesson of your life. One you’ll always want to remember, and do with every breath. Life changing and true Core Strengthening.
Pilates, took me to the Scoliosis world. I became invested by becoming an Authorized Scolio-Pilates Practitioner to work with any curvature. Still wanting more, became a Personal Trainer with a Specialty and provider for all my affiliations.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back in time, would I do something different? This is such a hard question because all I know is the path I have chosen. I would be a different person if I were doing something else. I had tested for the Fire-Department, too bad I didn’t take that seriously. One of my besties is retiring after 25 years fully vested, and getting all of her pay!!! Wow, if only! I don’t think I’d be happy doing anything else. After all I did start teaching at 14. Now the lesson I teach is for all humanity to learn.
