We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Darko recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexis , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My podcast Soul Care is the most meaningful project I’ve worked on because of how deep it goes and the greater vision I have for it. When I first started recording I was still in a rather dark place in my mind, but I figured so were hundreds of people out there. We have many choices when we are suffering, and one of them is to share, so that is exactly what I did. Soul Care is a holistic wellness movement created to connect our physical being to the spiritual realm; to use our infinite power in the spirit to influence and positively effect our natural lives. Growing up in the church I did not understand that God was not just this big guy in the sky or the scary controller of destiny. I did not know He could feel like a Friend and a Father, a Teacher, and a day-to-day Helper. As I began to research the mind and take the concept of healing seriously; I realized as I looked around, many of us were broken, but just so good at hiding it. So now, as I execute a wellness movement that is holistic, I am learning what it means to be a leader of not just a product, but within the influencing of minds.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Standing in my mid-twenties, I am a curious mind who studied in the 5 Year MBA Program at Hampton University. During my Junior year I took part in a NASA Pitch Competition, and to my surprise earned the rights to a technology that stirred my interest in Entrepreneurship. As I am pivoting in the space of business, I am also entering the space of Mental Health Advocacy with my Podcast, Soul Care with Alexis Victoria. What we provide here is a safe space to learn and grow in this crazy thing called life! Finding my groove and learning the audience has been important for me as we are just getting started. Throughout this journey, I look forward to providing resources and at some point – a compound, that will serve as tools in our journey of seeking healing and wholeness holistically. Soul Care solves the problem of surface-level conversations; although not bad, we are in a time in this earth where we need to dig deep about what we may be dealing with, and how to become better people, not just for ourselves, but for the future generations.
I am most proud of sticking to it. It’s said that over 70% of podcasts started do not record past Episode 10. It’s easy to start, but harder to stay in a game that requires studying, knowledge, and true care for a subject and people. I look forward to continuing and growing the platform as we see tangible change.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There is a Sermon by one of my Spiritual Leaders, Bishop TD Jakes, called “Timing is Everything.” This message has echoed within my mind for the past few months when I’ve found myself in challenging situations. As I am going after a career in Fashion, leading a podcast, and innovating with some of the brightest minds in the technology space; I’ve learned the dance of entrepreneurship can sometimes feel slow and at other times like the tango. Timing is everything when creating, because the number one reason start-ups fail is creating something that people do not need. So though you may be in love with an idea, or have a cool execution, if you aren’t solving anything, you aren’t selling anything. Timing is everything in modeling, when you hear the no’s repeatedly, but must believe what’s yours will come. Timing is everything with content creation, because you are learning the cadence of the lives of those you serve and how to be a timely resource who can be trusted. Once I surrendered my timeframe in Entrepreneurship, I had the liberty to pivot without unnecessary pressure, and go back to the drawing board as many times as we’re needed. I like to think of the Drake lyric that says, “It ain’t about who did it first, it’s about who did it right.” I am no longer in a rush, but creating and innovating with a peaceful urgency, trusting that what I produce and who I am created to effect in this life will receive what’s already ordained, at the right time.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Non-creatives may struggle to understand, creativity and dream-like aspirations do not just disappear after or during periods of struggle. It’s easy for a parent to say “just get a job, stop doing art!” or a friend to say “you know you could just start something else right?” True creatives aren’t shifty. They are laser focused on their dreams. They are calculated and understand that though results may not be seen now, even the waiting is a part of the journey to greatness. It’s hard to stick in a relationship that feels like it’s going downhill and it’s hard to be a new CEO and not understand there will be people that started with you, that may not end with you, but when you understand it is about the journey, the whole view – not just the moment or what it appears, it makes it easier to endure and be committed until things do go as you wish. Non-creatives tend to be a little more linear and a little less risky. The good thing is, we are all integral parts of this life and one without the other, would be a catastrophic imbalance.
