We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Collins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
I wouldn’t be nearly the person (or baker!) I am today without such an incredible customer base. I often give back to loyal customers through discounts, freebies, etc. But, the biggest way I choose to say thank you is by donating free cakes to those in need. Once a month or so, I will choose a local mom to donate a birthday cake to – whether for her children (because I have absolutely been in the space where a birthday cake was a luxury, much more so a custom one), or a cake for herself, because mom’s often get overlooked and deserve something kind too!

Alexis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I originally started The Cakery ATX in 2022, after making a birthday cake for my mom that turned out surprisingly well. I’ve enjoyed baking my entire life, and considered pastry school briefly before finding out I was pregnant with my son. While it was an ambition, it wasnt realistic once he joined my journey – raising a toddler and careful measurements don’t exactly go hand in hand. But, something about that birthday cake (my mom’s) really reignited that passion for baking and creating. My fiance and family all said I should start a business, so a $20 Amazon decorating kit and a dream later… The Cakery ATX was brought to life!
The Cakery ATX has not only been a creative outlet for me, but a true inspiration to follow my passions in all aspects of my life. Without this business I would have never gone back to school to finish my Bachelor’s degree, I wouldn’t be pursuing my Master’s degree – I wouldn’t have the same belief in myself. Beyond the self recognition, I think The Cakery ATX has allowed me to set an example of ambition and dedication for my son. He has witnessed first hand the melt downs when things just aren’t working, the excitement when I get a positive review, the gratification when something challenged me and turned out better than I could have ever expected. It’s important for him to see that, because if I can build something – he can build something better.
One goal I have for The Cakery ATX is to provide quality cakes that make people happy. Kids birthday cakes and gender reveals are my favorite, but as a 2026 bride I have a soft spot for elopements too! When I get an order, my mission is to deliver something that brings joy and nostalgia to adults, and unfiltered excitement to children.
When it comes to my customers – I couldnt appreciate them more if I tried. They genuinely are the best part of this business, and each review left truly does mean the world to me. I read every one and do my best to respond to them with the same enthusiasm I feel.
I think what sets me apart from other local cottage bakers is my belief that everyone deserves a cake they love. I obviously have to cover my cost, but I will always work with a customer to deliver something they will love, within their budget- with the same amount of love and care I would put into a high dollar, custom order.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media! I started off with a Facebook page and a dream – and nearly all of my orders have come from that.
Once I built relationships with a few consistent customers, and had a few reviews under my belt – many people close to me began tagging me in posts on socials pages of mom’s and other community members looking for cakes, which has been another incredible blessing in gaining business traction.

How’d you meet your business partner?
My wonderful fiance is my very loyal, very unpaid business partner!
We met at a party by happenstance and knew pretty much immediately that this was it for us. Without him and his endless encouragement, support, advertising, and taste testing, I would have never started The Cakery ATX, and certainly wouldn’t have the business I have today!
