We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexis Brock a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alexis thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
The moment that changed everything for me & is essentially what led me down this path was my freshman year of college, my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Thankfully my mother successfully beat cancer and took all the treatments like a champ, she has been cancer free for several years now. The thing is you typically hear about these things happening to other people, but never imagine you’d experience someone so close to you go through this challenge. The part that was kind of weird for me was when people found out & everyone began to constantly asking you if your okay & how your mom is doing?… It was a constant reminder that I was not in control at all, & I truly did not know what the future held. My mom always told my brother & I that she wanted us to continue to live our lives, so there was this constant battle of wanting to feel sad/helpless, and also trying to continue through life like nothing happened.
This lead me to try and discover why this happened & how I can avoid it from happening to me. I was overcome with fear, & trying to discover the answers essentially led me down a path of becoming more and more fearful. During these discoveries I decided I wanted to study holistic nutrition and moved hundreds of miles away to do so. My choice to study this topic was to hopefully overcome some of my fears, because many of my fears began to be centered around food. Long story short, I ended up having an intense panic attack at lowe’s a few months after I moved. After that happened I prayed to God for healing, eventually I was led to a meditation healing center and discovered the power of sound.
This one challenge led to many other challenges, simply because I tried to gain control of something I had no control over. Through meditation and strengthening my relationship with God I have learned to let go of the things I wish to control allow life to happen, knowing it is happening for me & not to me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Alexis. I was once a competitive athlete, now a meditation teacher.
It is likely we have more things in common than you think. I know I can’t be the only one that has felt the need to search for fulfillment, has had a desire to be seen, loved, heard and the list goes on… My life took a profound turn my freshman year of college when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. Everything changed for me, I was overcome by fear. I began to develop an extreme fear of food, became depressed & of course the anxiety flooded in. I did my absolute best to hide all of these feelings, and put my energy toward finding answers. This lead me to drop out of school & move to California. I ended up in Silicon Valley and to be honest, I didn’t even know what Silicon Valley was. My journey began with studying Holistic Nutrition in hopes of overcoming my fear of food, a few months after being in California I suffered from an intense panic attack while shopping at Lowe’s… This traumatic event led me to pray to God for healing, because whattttt… I knew something was not right.
By no surprise God delivered.
Prior to having the panic attack I had applied to work at many different jobs, one being a meditation healing center. The thing is I didn’t know it was a ‘healing center’ I just thought I was applying to work as a receptionist at a mediation place. I knew absolutely nothing about meditation, it just lined up with the ‘Holistic’ route I was trying to take. Long story short, I didn’t get the job but about a year later I had the opportunity to be a apprentice at the meditation healing center which is called iChakras.
Throughout my 3 1/2 years at iChakras I began to realize that there were many other things besides my mother’s diagnosis that was affecting me. As I began to strengthen my relationship with God and develop a meditation practice I discovered that while seeking guidance from others is valuable, direction from your creator is what will truly lead you to recognize your value and the power you hold. While studying and training at iChakras I became certified in mediation and holistic healing. My journey truly is just beginning, the next step is enrolling back in school this Fall 2024 to study Music Therapy in hopes of becoming a music therapist. I am excited to share all that I have learned as well as learn from each and every person that I have the opportunity to hold space for.
I am not here to give you the answers, my goal is simply to create a space for you to feel empowered and recognize all that you hold within!
I offer private and group sound healing sessions. You can book your private session to be hosted in the comfort of your own home, or you can come to my studio space that is located in a beautiful art gallery called, Brushworks Studio & Gallery. You can also book an experience for your business or team, it is a good opportunity to bring your team together or simply give people an opportunity to relax and let go of all of their stressors. I also host group classes with a local artist called, The Art of Healing. Our classes consist of a guided sound bath and a softly guided painting class. This gives people the opportunity to express themselves fully through their creativity, while also being surrounded by their community.
Overall, my goal is to help athletes and people of all ages to manage their stress, anxiety, depression as well as help them to boost their confidence, creativity and productivity.
Sound exist all throughout our life & I really am committed to helping and guiding other to recognize the power of sound. Whether that be through music or the sound that we create with the words we use and how we express them.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Letting go of control. As I mentioned previously I really struggled with control, whether that be to fix everything in my life or trying to help others fix the problems in their life. This did not benefit me in any way, overtime I have learned to let life guide me and only focus on controlling the things I actually have the power/ability to change. Still to this day I am working on strengthening that muscle even more and having complete trust in my path and where it will take me.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The thing I believe to be most helpful is connecting with others and being willing to listen to someone else’s story/feelings. Many of us just need someone to listen and allow us to express ourselves without judgement. That opens the door for healing in their life because they have the opportunity to see themselves more and accept themselves. In the world we live in, it can be challenging to truly see ourselves because of all the noise and external pressure.
