Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexis Bostrom. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Talk to us about building your team? What was it like? What were some of the key challenges and what was your process like?
In the beginning, it was just me—and my husband. He was my first and only real employee for the first four seasons, and together we did it all. From early mornings to late nights, we wore every hat and built the foundation of Big Wolf side by side. It was chaotic at times, exhausting often, but always deeply meaningful. There’s something powerful about building your dream with someone who believes in it as much as you do.
As Big Wolf began to grow, we realized it was time to bring in help—and honestly, that was intimidating. Letting go of some control, trusting others with something so personal—it wasn’t easy. But we’ve been incredibly lucky. The team we’ve built is everything we could have hoped for. The best people—talented, kind, reliable, and most importantly, people we genuinely feel comfortable and confident around. They get Big Wolf. They represent it with pride and heart, and that means everything to us.
Hiring that first round beyond just the two of us felt like a huge leap. We didn’t have a fancy recruitment process—just honest conversations, intuition, and a whole lot of hope. It’s not always conventional, but it’s authentic, and that’s what matters most to us. The way it all unfolded feels like it was meant to be. We grew slow and steady, and now we’re surrounded by a team that feels like family.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Alexis Bostrom, owner of Big Wolf Siteworks LLC. I’m the boots-on-the-ground, behind-the-scenes, and heart-at-the-center of this business. Big Wolf Siteworks is a woman-owned excavation company rooted in hard work, honesty, and doing things the right way—even when it’s not the easiest way. We’re based in Taylors Falls, Minnesota, and we specialize in excavation, land clearing, grading, driveways, drainage solutions, and everything in between.
My journey into this industry wasn’t exactly traditional—and maybe that’s what sets me apart. I didn’t grow up thinking I’d run an excavation business, but I can’t imagine doing anything else. After working in other industries and watching my husband thrive in this kind of work, I realized there was space for me too—not just to participate, but to lead and create something of my own. That’s how Big Wolf was born.
In the early days, it was just me and my husband grinding through every job, every season. For four seasons, we did it all ourselves. That built the foundation—not just of our skills, but of our reputation. We built trust with clients, we listened, we showed up, and we didn’t leave until the job was done right.
Now we’re growing, and with that growth has come an incredible team of people we’re proud to work with. They represent Big Wolf with the same integrity and pride we started with, and that’s what I’m most proud of. We’re not a huge operation—but we’re real, reliable, and relentless about quality.
For potential clients or followers, I’d want you to know this: we care. We’re not in this for shortcuts or quick cash—we’re in this for legacy work, for being the name you trust to take care of your project like it’s our own. Being a woman in this space has had its challenges, but it’s also been a huge strength.
At the end of the day, Big Wolf Siteworks is about building—land, trust, relationships, and a reputation that lasts.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
At Big Wolf Siteworks, building lasting relationships with our clients is just as important as the work we do. We keep in touch by being accessible and approachable. We’re not just a company that shows up to do the job and then disappears—we make it a priority to stay connected, check in after the work is done, and ensure everything is still going smoothly.
We also foster loyalty by focusing on quality, always. We don’t cut corners. Every project is treated with the care and attention it deserves because we believe the work we do should speak for itself. But it’s not just about the work—we also want our clients to know us as real people. We’re honest, down-to-earth, and stick to our word. If we say we’re going to do something, we do it, and we do it well.
Our clients know that when they work with us, they’re getting a team that’s reliable, transparent, and committed to seeing their project through to the end. That level of trust and honesty goes a long way in keeping people coming back and referring us to others. Building relationships and creating real value is at the core of everything we do.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
When it comes to managing a team and maintaining high morale, my philosophy is simple: people come first. We’re relatively new to having employees and a formal team, but one thing I’ve learned is that family and personal well-being are the foundation of our culture at Big Wolf Siteworks. We all have lives outside of work, and I truly believe that if we prioritize each other’s well-being, the work will naturally follow.
I understand that there are always project timelines and deadlines to meet, but if someone on our team needs to step away for personal reasons—whether it’s family, health, or something else—that’s always a priority. Life happens, and we’re all human. I’m a firm believer that when you support your team through the tough times, they’ll give their best during the work times.
Being new to having employees means I’m still learning, but I’ve always believed that open communication, flexibility, and supporting each other is key. We make it a point to be transparent, to ensure everyone feels heard, and to show that we value the person as much as the work they do. When you create that kind of environment, it naturally boosts morale and makes the work more enjoyable, even when the pressure is on.
At the end of the day, our team is a family, and taking care of each other makes us stronger and more committed to delivering quality work. High morale doesn’t come from pressure—it comes from knowing you have a team that’s got your back, no matter what.
