We were lucky to catch up with Alexis Allen-Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I have been painting for 3 years now. It’s always been for fun and to have something to hang up in my apartment. A couple of my friends knew about my artwork, but never actually seen it. Until the beginning of 2022, one of my friends hooked me up as a vendor at a dance event. I was extremely grateful and nervous at the same time. I never thought about selling my artwork, let alone as a full-time job. A dilemma came along between the start time of the dance battle and my work shift, I kept going back and forth on should I go? Should I call off? Or should I just wait until it’s more convenient?
After all the contemplating, I finally made the decision to go to the dance battle. After calling off work, I made a mini prayer to God hoping I made the right decision and that everything will be alright. I sold 5 paintings and networked my butt off. Ever since that day I haven’t looked back since. Now I am selling artwork, putting myself out more, and making a name for myself. That was one risk I took and yet my happiest.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I understand how it feels to not be heard and when you’re requesting something, or even asking for advice. I look forward to delivering your vision on a canvas.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal on my creative journey is to find my niche on my artwork; when viewers see my work in there neighborhoods, online, or in commercials they will automatically recognize it’s me.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson that I had to unlearn is perfectionism. I used to have the mindset that whatever I was creating had to be amazing on the first try. I would beat myself up and start over. However, the most rewarding aspect of being a creator is having someone express to you that you have inspired them. Inspirations coming from appearance, speech or how the way your work speaks to them. It makes me as the creator aware that i have done my job as an artist. My Most fan favorites are the paintings that needed a retouch or I had to start over from scratch.
