We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexis Alarcon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexis, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue this path I’m on, was when I was in High School. I remember watching a “Genius Deconstructed” video about the Producer Nick Mira. At that time, he was producing for the late rapper Juice WRLD and he talked about how whenever he got out of school, he would listen to the song he produced being played by the students in their cars. I think that’s such a cool feeling to have and I’m still aspiring to feel that way one day. Around 2018-19, I started making beats on my old laptop. Fast forward to 2024, I’m now in college studying Audio Engineering and rapping over beats.

Alexis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For anyone who does not know me, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Alexis Alarcon and I’m from Schuyler, Nebraska, a small town of about 6,000 people. I got into my craft back in High School. I would walk around the halls most of the time feeling down or anxious. Music has always been there for me, whether it be rock, rap, indie, you name it! I would mostly listen to a ton of songs from the late Juice WRLD and I felt his music has always been cathartic in some sort of way. I suffer from Anxiety and Depression and have been diagnosed since I was in about 6th grade. My main goal with my music, is to help other people who are feeling the same way and to let them know that they are not alone in their suffering. I think what sets me apart from most creatives is that I am very versatile when it comes to making a song. I can make a song to almost any instrumental, as long as I put in the work of course.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I feel like society nowadays is very greedy and money hungry especially record labels. I believe artists should put out what they want when they want. I feel signing to a record label is very controlling, sure there are some labels that let you be creative, but I feel that that spark is gone. We could all work together in making a better society for our fellow musicians.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Oh definitely! The goal that is driving my creative journey, would have to be helping my family and making them proud. I would love to give back to them as they have always been there for me through the good times and the bad times! I actually have more than one goal that’s driving this journey, like making the world a better place and having my music be a safe space for everyone, especially the newer generation because almost all of the young kids today are broken and full of trauma. It’s a generational curse that needs to be broken.
