We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexia Konko. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexia below.
Hi Alexia, thanks for joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I took a leap of faith and recently opened up my own private practice. Over the past year, I can honestly say that the best “marketing” strategy has been being my authentic self. Of course having my website, Psychology today profile, and social media accounts up as advertisements helped draw clients to my practice. I narrowed down who I want to help and with what. My theoretical orientation is Mindfulness and Holistic Psychology, which sets apart from the standard modes of orientation. I found that working with children, teens, and young adults with anxiety, depression, and school issues is my passion population. I have had great experience with networking within my communities and staying true to my vision of wanting to help others holistically.

Alexia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Licensed Psychologist and Licensed School Psychologist. What drew me to the field of Psychology was my desire and drive to help others. This originated naturally in childhood. I had a strong passion for education and psychology and wanted to combine the two. In my practice, I offer services to schools that are seeking consultation as well as, counseling and evaluations for students. I offer holistic based therapeutic services. I offer yoga and meditation events for the communities I serve. In the near future, I will be offering nutrition services for my clients, after completion of a Youth Nutrition Certificate this summer. What sets my practice apart from others is my ability to treat the whole person. It takes more than therapy to heal a person, and I pride myself on taking many different approaches.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Empathy and connection is something that training cannot necessarily teach you; I feel it has to come naturally. The patient-therapist relationship is a very significant one, and it can throttle change within a patient through that positive relationship.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy for growing my clientele is being authentic. Oftentimes, I receive referrals from old patients who I have successfully healed and helped. I couldn’t be more grateful.
