We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexia Harris. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexia below.
Alexia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I absolutely wish that I had pursued photography as a career sooner! As a kid I constantly had a film camera in my hand, and I photographed everything- sunsets, animals, my family, you name it. In high school, I started focusing on portraiture as a real artistic endeavor. I even applied to and was accepted into art school for college- man, I was so proud!- but back then there was very much a belief that you couldn’t make money as an artist. Not enough to actually support yourself. So photography ended up remaining a hobby for much of my adult life while I pursued a more “practical” career, but it always called to me. Jump forward to last year and my then-fiancée, Hayley, and I were planning our wedding. We booked a videographer, Fawn of Fawn & Bee Co, who offered complimentary engagement films with your wedding package. When we met, I was blown away. Fawn is in her early 20s, is so incredibly talented, and I cannot tell you how JEALOUS I was that she had a successful career doing something so similar to what I had been dying to do my entire life! I saw what the possible outcome could have been if I had decided to chase the more uncertain path when I was younger standing right there in front of me. That was the pivotal moment for me. I decided- finally!-that it was time to chase this dream- that I wasn’t going to waste another second of my life wishing that that was me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Of course! I’m from Louisville, Kentucky and I live with my wife, Hayley, and our adorable furbabies. My business, Lunar Theory Photography, is woman and LGBTQIA+ owned and operated. I offer multiple kinds of photography, including boudoir, portrait, engagements, branding, and performance events, but I have to say that boudoir really has my heart.
Boudoir is a type of photography that I feel really has the power to change the way people see themselves, perhaps because it is such a stripped down version of ourselves, pardon the pun. Inclusivity is one of the core values of my brand and is something I’m incredibly passionate about. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and a curvy girl, I am lucky enough to spend a lot of my time with a massive variety of beautifully different humans of all shapes, sizes, colors, and walks of life, and I want my studio to be somewhere all of those people can feel safe, comfortable, and understood.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Being self- taught, I’ve done a lot of research and learning from other creatives. Alex Miller from Liquid Verve, Julia Trotti, Jon Snipe, Pye Jirsa from the SLR lounge, David Suh, and many others offer amazing educational materials and mentorships that I would absolutely recommend for both beginners and more advanced photographers.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing the impact that it can have on people. Art can make us feel beautiful, accepted, inspirited, and connected. It can heal parts of us that we didn’t even know needed healing. We have a chance to step outside the bounds of our day-to-day selves and live our wildest dreams. It’s good for the soul.
