We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexi Mick Houle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I’ve been in the beauty industry most of my life as a hair stylist, makeup artist, cosmetic product developer and microblading artist.
Always creating, but I always felt the most strongly that brows are the essential of face framing beauty. Throughout my life, I continue to have a deep passion for beauty. Both the kind we see and the kind we feel. My goal isn’t just to help others look beautiful, but to help them feel confident and connected to who they are. I believe in enhancing natural beauty in a way that’s subtle, yet transformative. Never too much, but just enough. Realistic, natural looking brows can frame the face in a way that’s gentle, yet powerful. In the end, I believe that true beauty lies in the details and brows that frame it all.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I actually got into my industry because I left my job in Cosmetics Product Development. I loved developing cosmetics, but climbing the corporate ladder was not for me. I was a little lost in that moment trying to figure out my next path. Then I saw my Mom got microblading done in Ohio. Unfortunately, it was a poorly done job and they were pretty uneven. I never heard of Microblading and I asked her “you got what?!” From then and there I became obsessed. I was constantly researching Microblading and looking up different artists work. I was inspired not only to fix my Mom’s brows, but to start a career in something I knew I’d love and that’s just what I did. It was one of the most challenging career paths I’ve ever faced as it’s not something you are immediately good at. However, with my makeup artist background – it came a little more natural to me, but it still takes an abundance of time, patience and confidence. A lot of practice. Long hours of frustration to get better and to finally feel comfortable at it. I never gave up and knew this was my calling. I’m grateful for all my clients who believed in me and trusted me with their brows even when I was new to microblading. 8 years later I have my own business and studio which I love. I think what sets me apart from others would be how natural my work is on their brows. I like to keep a subtle enhancement, yet impactful. Your brows, just better.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe my kind, fun, patient and understanding personality helped to build my reputation. I know getting something done differently to your face can be scary and you need to trust the person doing it. I want the experience of getting your brows done to be a positive, easy going one. I want you to feel comfortable, knowledgeable and confident. I take my time with each and every client. I never rush as this is your face. It’s not a race for perfect brows.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me would be referrals. Once someone sees someone else’s brows that I’ve done in real life – that’s the best source of advertisement. You can see photos or videos, but seeing the brows in person makes more of an impression.
