Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexandria Phillips. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexandria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
When people think of physical therapy, the first thoughts are usually knee or hip replacements, back pain, post-op or post-injury, and balancing exercises. Amplify encourages investing in yourself. We educate people on placing importance on their health and wellness. We perform a FULL BODY analysis on every single new client, whether they originally came for a specific pain or just a wellness visit. We examine which parts of the body are tight and which parts are weak. We use manual therapy tools, such as dry needling, mobilizations, soft tissue mobilization, laser therapy, scraping, etc. to mobilize the tight parts. We use neuromuscular re-education, blood flow restriction (BFR), and other tools to strengthen the weak parts. Finally, a detail that also makes Amplify different, is that we are located only inside of full equipped gyms. We teach people how to move in the most appropriate way for their body with an added weight (barbell, dumbbell, etc.) This teaches people how to invest in themselves. Another word we use is “Prehab.” Why wait until you’re injured? Ever notice how avoiding something that is “annoying” always leads to something even worse. For example, not eating healthy leads to weight gain or poor health. Or not exercising leads to weakness and ultimately pain. Not investing in yourself leads to injuries and pain that could have been avoided. Amplify is the first step to invest in yourself.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
While in undergrad at UT (go vols), I did the typical switch majors thing about a dozen times. I went from nursing, athletic trainer, considered pre-med for five seconds, and then landed on physical therapy. I knew I wanted to be in the medical field, but physical therapy was a big step for me. Accepting the fact that I would now have 3 extra years after undergrad of more school was a bit tough. But as soon as I got to PT school, I knew I had chosen the right profession.
Understanding the body in as much detail as we do brings a ton of confidence. Understanding how the body moves and how we can use our OWN hands to help someone prevent a major surgery, decrease someone’s pain, or help a patient achieve his or her goals is extremely uplifting. Although I obviously enjoy being a physical therapist, starting my own clinic was the best decision I’ve made. I’ve had plenty of ups and downs throughout the process, and I’m sure many more to come; however, being able to create an ideal environment of physical therapy has been a dream.
I started Amplify a little over a year ago. Amplify is an out-of-network, prehab and rehabilitation clinic located inside of gyms. Amplify encourages you to “invest in yourself” BEFORE you’re injured. Invest now before the crippling pain hits or the sleepless nights occur. Our method to this prehab is to assess (the full body of course), mobilize what is tight, strengthen what is weak, and then load the body. We are located inside of fully equipped gyms so that we can introduce clients to weight lifting. We educate clients on how to maintain this strength so they can go back to their normal lives pain free!
Amplify typically treats business owners, executives, artists, athletes, etc. However, this doesn’t mean anyone is ever excluded! Our clients range anywhere from 14 to 81! No matter the age or gender, the motto and method stays the same! No pain is a normal pain, whether you’re a business owner who travels every other week and plays golf on weekends, or a stay at home mom who enjoys tennis!
We treat tons of golfers, weight lifters, pickleball and tennis players, and even equestrian riders!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
As soon as I started my clinic, I knew marketing was going to be essential. In physical therapy school, we do not learn ANYTHING about how to market. In my head, I needed to bring someone lunch, a gift basket, or some type of pen. Unfortunately for me, wasn’t quite sure where, when or how to go about this process. BUT I discovered quickly that marketing was no issue for me. I introduced myself to physicians, surgeons, concierge medical groups, golf pros, nutritionists, etc. This eventually became my favorite part of the job!
Although now, most of my new clientele comes from word of mouth, I still enjoy marketing! I’ve gotten much more creative with the different types of professions that can be team players! Over time I’ve learned that the best way to market a business to others is by being genuinely interested in learning about their business rather than quick to speak about your own company.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Not necessarily a lesson, but a habit that had to be unlearned (very quickly) was having a scheduled routine. I enjoy to-do lists. I love marking things off. Before starting this business, I would sometimes even write, “make a to-do list,” so that I could mark it off. Almost immediately after starting Amplify, I had to unlearn the habit of organized structure. I still make a to-do list every day, but ask me how many items were marked off today. 1. Only 1. And that’s ok. Now, instead of organized structure, I enjoy organized chaos. I know there is always something to be marked off of the to-do list, but I enjoy the fact of never knowing exactly what the day will look like!
