We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexandria Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexandria below.
Hi Alexandria, thanks for joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
My brother was a fan/follower of vegan influencer/actress Tabitha Brown, and I was talking to him about how I was having a hard time learning to Market my business.
He suggested I send Tabitha some of my potions because she had a segment on her social media called ‘Very Good Mondays’ where she’d review products on live.
I sent her a box full of products and went on with my life. I basically forgot I had sent the products because it was almost a week before she reviewed them.
The following Monday I began getting orders back to back, and made almost five thousand dollars in just under 48 hours, as well as acquired hundreds of new customers.
That was March 2020, and I have retained most of those customers over these last couple years. I always think back about how excited and overwhelmed I was but I’m still so grateful for that whole experience.

Alexandria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
It’s my passion to create vegan skincare and home products that smell amazing, are skin healthy and cruelty-free to create a peaceful mind, body and home.
Prissy Potions began as a conversation with my now husband. We were on the phone and I don’t remember about what exactly, but something he said made me feel like I could be doing more.
I decided to start a business and began researching markets, business ideas, etc. I settled on candles and began experimenting.
I took some samples to my corporate job and asked for feedback. It was October when I started and so many people loved my samples, and they wanted to place orders. I was soo excited and after that I began building my website and legalizing my business.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of my main struggles was finding a way to scale successfully, and though it’s still a struggle, one thing I’ve learned is that it doesn’t help to just sell my products to anyone.
I wasted thousands trying to promote with other social media influencers who had really large followings, however not in my niche, and I failed.
I learned a valuable customer who truly is a target customer is better than someone who is only making a one time purchase.

How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell on my website mainly, and sometimes I do vendor shows and sell in person. I chose Shopify because they’re the leading platform for e-commerce.
I really love the suggestions shopify provides for my business. The main thing I love about having a website is that it doesn’t close, soo my opportunity to make money is always there.
