We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alexandria Grado a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alexandria, appreciate you joining us today. Any thoughts around creating more inclusive workplaces?
There are so many beliefs behind each generation especially when it comes to quality of life and finding that work-life balance. I’ve also seen the same conditioned mindset in a majority of women in our industry and I am breaking down these barriers and conditioned beliefs to create an inclusive work environment where everyone succeeds. I think it’s important to recognize that everyone’s success looks different. To someone success could be having their dream home and they take a vacation 1-2 times per year. To others it may be owning multiple penthouses and more luxury items. I’m here to help each person find their goals for success, and create an environment where they will be able to achieve that.
Alexandria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
First and foremost, I am in the business of building people up. Whether you are a part of my team or you are a guest in our salon, I want you to feel amazing and grow as individuals. I am the owner and visionary for The Glam House, which is a beauty salon company with multiple salon locations and a lash bar. The Glam House beauty salon was our first stepping stone to what we are building as a brand. My vision is to build wealth among anyone who wants to leave a legacy in the beauty industry. We offer top of the line services with incredible products in an effortless way. This brand will be something you will hear about all over the world.
In turn with making this vision a reality I truly get to live in my passion. My passion is people. We have been working with a new mantra, “leading with love”. I try to keep this in the forefront of my mind when I am working with my team. I love the fact that I get to help young people become a better version of themselves mentoring them while being creative. I am changing the game in the beauty industry. We are meeting our people where they are. Wherever that may be emotionally, mentally, or financially. I am not here to just be an inspiration, I am here for transformation.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience… grit… tenacity… I have heard these words my entire life. I am so grateful I have those qualities. I have had so many different situations that these qualities gave me powerful tools to push myself forward in life. From my start in the business world to where I am today, I think the most important thing for me was to maintain what I believed. This form of resilience helped me rebuild after the majority of my team walked out on me. At that moment I asked myself, “What could I and the brand have done better?”. As much as I wanted to sit there and be angry and blame others, I knew I didn’t have time for that. I knew I was building something bigger, and if I stayed in a place of hate or anger then I would still be there today. So I kept on moving with my two employees I had left and built the brand up to 40 true team members who are dedicated to what we are building together. We are still growing and praise god, I received that lesson because it has helped me be thankful and realize who is loyal as we change this industry.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As a child I was raised by a man who was in the military and came from a Mexican household. It was very strict and serious. I watched my dad go into business and treat his employees the same as he was raising me, so I had to relearn the context and the perspective I saw him in. When I started my business I acted a lot like him with the perspective I had as a child, and it didn’t go over well. When I learned that his style of leadership was not going to work as my own I had to relearn where my love and kindness lived. I had to learn where I could be the best version of myself as a leader and within the last few years I have created my own style as a leader that I can stand behind and build a powerful team. My dad’s style of leadership was guided by love and kindness that I couldn’t see when I was younger, and only discovered as I found my own.
