We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alexandria Carroll. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alexandria below.
Alexandria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I could do things over I would definitely not try to fit in, or force myself to be somthing I am not. It took me a long time to accept that what I do might be the same as others but what I make is not. And that is ok. It’s ok to create, explore and try new things even if it fails. I wish I found that sooner so I can skip the entire year I tried making items I deemed appropriate clothing for everyone.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started The Modern Alien as a graphic T-shirt company because I love to wear t-shirts and leggings. Once I was fully into it I found myself being forced to get creative with shirts and I just got over it. So then I started to create different articles of clothing. I did decorate for awhile, but found myself always wanting to change something about the garment I was decorating. This is when I started to teach myself to sew and it’s been nonstop from there!
Now I design Festival, funky fashion from upcycled materials.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I feel like in order to grow and develop you will always need to pivot in the direction your lead too. I know I have done it many times and I am sure many more to come. The most memorizable pivot that comes to mind is transitioning from everyday clothing to narrowing down to my niche of festivals.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy is being naturally myself. What I mean by that is in order to build a customer, you have to gain their trust. Well the best way to gain their trust is to befriend them, hence be your natural self. Talk to them like their a friend your excited to tell some news too.
