We recently connected with Alexandria Bowerman and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandria, thanks for joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing anyone has done for me is give me a gift on what would have been my son’s 2nd birthday. They gave me TY baby that has the same birthday as my son, Derrick. The bear is holding a flower pot that says “thinking of you.” I often wonder if my son thinks of me as often as I think of him, and that gift assured me that he does.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Alexandria Bowerman. I am the founder and president of Derrick Stone Safe Sleep. Our mission is to eliminate accidental infant loss by spreading awareness about the dangers of an unsafe sleep environment, along with providing caregivers with education and resources to assure each baby has access to safe sleep. I started spreading awareness after my son passed away due to the way he was laid to sleep. I started telling our story online and at local events focused on health, safety, and wellbeing. We are now a nonprofit organization that offers workshops and safe sleep resources. I have learned from a variety of people. Medical professionals, examiners, fellow safe infant sleep champs, families who have also suffered from infant loss, and my son. They have each gifted me with perspective and education that I love to share. I am proud of myself for doing something productive with my pain. Although I know my pain has a purpose, this pain could have been prevented. Derrick has gifted us with awareness. Once we know better, we do better.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Each time that I host a workshop, attend a networking event, or meeting – I feel this heaviness, a void. I wouldn’t be in this room if Derrick were here now, but then I remember I wouldn’t be in the room at all if it weren’t for my son. I love the rooms I’m in, and the space we take up together. I honor my emotions, allow them to be present, and then follow up by grounding myself in the present moment. I am so happy to know Derrick, and grateful to be surrounded by people with similar values and goals.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Transparency, honesty, and acceptance. We create a safe spot for all to be honest about their journey, and we meet them where they are.
