We were lucky to catch up with Alexandrea Dendy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandrea, thanks for joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Sunflower bookkeeping takes the chaos out of accounting for small businesses and micro entrepreneurs.
During the pandemic, I got the entrepreneur bug just like so many other people. I started an online fashion boutique and quickly realized how the handling of finances was a huge operational stressor on small business owners and entrepreneurs. From setting up the accounting software to learning tax requirements, I spent a lot of time worrying if my books were in order instead of focusing on how I could provide the best online experience for my customers. Many entrepreneurs in my network were facing the same struggles.
Fortunately, my years of accounting expertise helped me navigate those challenges within my own fashion start up. My brand began to slow down as supply chain issues arose. But, as that business stifled another emerged. One where we could help others who are running their businesses as side hustles. Passionate entrepreneurs who want to spend their time delivering top tier service and not tinkering around for hours trying to track & see the trends of your business transactions.
That’s why our mission at Sunflower Bookkeeping is to provide efficient, accurate and cost-effective virtual bookkeeping services to small and medium-sized businesses, enabling them to get their time back and focus on their core operations. We strive to be a reliable partner in managing our clients’ finances, by delivering timely financial information with integrity and transparency.
Alexandrea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi everyone! I’m Alexandrea Dendy, born in Atlanta with ties to 3 southeastern states. I’ve always considered myself a number nerd LOL! I studied psychology in undergrad, but after taking my first accounting course, I knew it was the industry for me. I moved to Orlando, FL after graduation and was blessed with a position doing accounting for a loan company that specialized in providing capital to marginalized business owners.
Right now, I am the staff accountant for a real estate development company, where I have gained my Certified Public Bookkeeper License and am currently completing my Masters of Accounting to become a CPA. Being in the industry helped me start up my bookkeeping company because I saw firsthand how intimidating finances could be for business owners.
Sunflower Bookkeeping provides 3 main services to help business owners take back their time and focus on their passions/operations. We offer historical clean-ups for businesses that may have fallen behind on their financial reporting; monthly packages for those that would like to stay organized and on top of their finances; and quarterly reviewing for freshly started businesses that may not have enough transactions to warrant a monthly packages.
The unique thing about Sunflower Bookkeeping is it is a virtual bookkeeping service that still offers that personal touch and attention to detail as if we were an in house team. One thing I am most proud of is that we are able to serve any business, from nonprofit to for profit, and every industry on the spectrum.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
There are several ways Sunflower Bookkeeping keeps in touch with clients and fosters brand loyalty. The first is through regular communication. All of our services come with a monthly (or quarterly) advisory meeting so clients are able to stay informed about the progress of their bookkeeping. Outside of these meetings, clients are able to reach out directly via text, phone and email with a guaranteed quick response rate.
The 3 ways we foster brand loyalty is through personalized attention, transparency and quality service. We understand that every business is not made the same, so we cater each service to exceed the unique expectations of our clients’ needs and pain points. We also communicate with our clients in a way that is clear, honest and transparent, updating them on any issues we come across or any strategies that may help with financial trends. Lastly, we provide high-quality service that exceeds their needs and builds a reputation for reliability and expertise that keeps our clients wanting to renew their contracts.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Social media and referrals have been the most effective strategies for growing my clientele. We live in a world where everything is searchable via Google or hashtags, so by using those sources, I’ve been able to bring in clientele from areas that are outside of Orlando. I’ve also joined a few business groups through Facebook that have made many businesses aware of the services I offer. Word of mouth has also been a huge help in gaining clientele. Clients who are pleased with my work, as well as, my community of friends and family have advertised my services to those who have a bookkeeping need.
