Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexandra Stewart. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexandra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve been a full-time photographer since age 16, beginning at Glamour Shots in Fort Myers, Florida. It’s a humble beginning to some, but it taught me the essence of photography and client experience. I was surrounded by a wonderful team of people, some of who I am still friends with to this day. It was my first example of a creative team working together.
Encouraged by my boyfriend (now husband), we moved to LA for more opportunities. While interning for a local wedding company, I learned the ropes and eventually ran the office. It was during that time that I learned not only how to elevate my photography but to run a successful business.
Every step-up I took in my photography career was crucial. Event photography involves coordinating numerous elements before, during, and after the event. Those aspiring to start their own wedding or event photography business should learn the intricacies from the inside out, emphasizing more than just the creative aspects.
Looking back, understanding the business side early on turned out to be a game-changer. I didn’t fully appreciate my natural strengths, and that held me back. In photography, knowing your worth is stressed for a reason – neglecting it can be a real obstacle.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a photographer based in Los Angeles with a focus on engagement, wedding, and event photography. I’ve been a professional wedding photographer since 2010, but my passion for photography goes back as far as my earliest memories. Discovering a childhood photo of myself on Christmas morning, holding a toy camera in my little neon parachute pants, solidified the realization that I’ve always been a photographer.
I was born and raised in Fort Myers, Florida, a city that wasn’t well-known during my childhood. I never expected much for myself or my future. I met my husband as a teenager at the county fair and we’ve been together ever since. He has always been my biggest supporter, inspiring me to be the woman I am today. My belief in love is genuine, which is perhaps why I’ve always found joy in capturing wedding moments.
On a wedding day, my aim is to do more than capture beautiful photos; I want to capture memories for the next generation. I care about all my clients and their families. Growing up without a large, close family, I feel a sense of belonging when they invite me to capture events after the wedding – be it a maternity shoot, a nephew’s bar-mitzvah, or a sister’s bridal shower. Through photography, I’ve formed meaningful connections with so many wonderful people in this community, essentially building my own extended family over the years.
I take great pride in the business I’ve created as it has paved the way for a life I never envisioned. Earning a living through a job I love is more than most people can hope for. I’m grateful everyday for the many clients and fellow vendors who trust me to do what I do.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Honesty and consistency are foundational. When clients choose to work with me, they can expect a reliable experience. I prioritize trust, whether discussing expectations or delivering on promises. Consistency is key, maintaining quality from the initial consultation to the final image delivery.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Save diligently! Putting money into your business is an investment in yourself! During my teenage years, I saved up so many paychecks to purchase my first camera and a 50mm lens, a major step for me. It helped me with building a portfolio that opened doors to other photography opportunities. The savings didn’t stop there! They went towards additional equipment, licenses, insurance, and editing software, hard-drives… the list goes on! Running a photography business can be costly, so starting with the right essentials is so important for establishing a secure foundation for your future.
