We were lucky to catch up with Alexandra Calvo recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Alexandra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?

If there’s one thing I’ve discovered, it’s that nobody is as invested in your business as you are. Out of all the individuals I’ve collaborated with, only two individuals stand out for genuinely caring about every aspect of the business and conducting research whenever problems arose. I believe we are all guilty of this. It’s incredibly easy to clock out at the end of the day and simply forget about the issues that are impacting the business’s profitability or customer satisfaction.

As a business owner, there’s no escape, and you’re constantly grappling with multiple challenges simultaneously. When you have employees working for your small business, a mistake that harms the company doesn’t truly affect them, which makes sense, but it can be challenging to navigate since you have to avoid taking it personally. Nevertheless, it can feel incredibly isolating at times. While others may view it as just another job, for you, it’s your livelihood and the embodiment of your dreams.

On a positive note, you can find solace in the fact that you’re not alone. Networking, thought it sounds boring, has been so helpful. I’ve talked to so many mentors and business owners who have been through it all and it has really helped me solve marketing, shipping and technical issues as well as make friends who understand the challenges.

Alexandra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

For years, I battled with skin issues that affected my confidence. Acne, rosacea, and dryness were constant challenges, especially in a family who kept telling me to “drink more water” as the cure for everything.

After trying numerous remedies, including prescription treatments and considering drastic Accutane measures, I knew there had to be a better way.

I started experimenting with homemade skincare and my skin healed within 6 months. Driven by my own transformation, I launched NuRevealSkincare in Venice Beach to offer a solution to others still searching. Inspired by the values of healing, simplicity, and self-care, our products are meticulously crafted to nourish all skin types, effectively addressing concerns like acne, scars, and fine lines while restoring essential moisture.

Our small-batch, vegan products provide a truly indulgent self-care experience. We pride ourselves on using only essential oils for scent.

I’m passionate about sharing my love for natural skincare as well as animals (I have 3 pets), which is why our products are cruelty-free. Enjoy the tranquility and peace of mind knowing that all of our products are PETA approved!

Have you ever had to pivot?

Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered numerous instances where I developed products that I believed would be successful, only to discover otherwise. It is crucial to learn from customers, understanding their preferences and dislikes. Their feedback serves as a valuable lesson, guiding future product development and ensuring alignment with their needs and desires.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

It’s quite unique, but we have never invested in traditional advertising throughout our 8 years in business. Instead, we have relied solely on word-of-mouth to sustain our success.

However, I am intrigued by the idea of advertising and recognize its potential. In the future, we plan to explore advertising as an additional strategy to further expand our reach and grow our business.
