Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexandra Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexandra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was in the corporate world as a leader in the social & content space for nearly 10 years and had worked my way up the ladder at several companies I admire with teams I still adore to this day when I had the light bulb moment that I could be doing so much more to contribute to others and to this world in an intentional way. During the Black Lives Matter movement, I attended every protest under the sun and participated in as many volunteer activations as I could, all while realizing that while I was supporting the cause, my mental health was slowly deteriorating at the same time as I was pouring so much of myself into the movement and watching the continuous lack of resources and support for so many underserved communities across LA. It was then that I began leaning into my love of fitness for some mental clarity and at the same time, discovered wellness wasn’t just about moving your body – it was holistic. In order to feel truly well, I needed to nurture my mind, body, and spirit. From there, the initial idea of what become known as Good Active was born.
I envisioned a community wellness brand that created safe, accessible, affordable, inclusive, welcoming spaces for like-minded people to come together in the name of becoming a little bit better each day. A brand that would help like-minded people lean into community, redefine the traditional view that wellness means perfection, and help others feel seen who just want to lean into their personal growth. As an LA native, I grew up attending wellness events across the city and never quite saw myself in any of them when it came to my skin tone, my frame of mind, and so many other aspects. Because I didn’t feel like I fit in in the current world of wellness in LA, I created it.
In 2024, after many years of being terrified to quit my job and become my own boss, I finally decided to leave my cushy full time role and dive head first into building Good Active. I was terrified. I wasn’t sure how it would be received, but I knew I wanted to help people and I knew somehow that this was my calling.
The response has been more fantastic that I could have ever imagined. We have members drive 3+ hours to attend our events. Members who cry at nearly every event they attend because it’s the one place they’re able to feel authentically, unapologetically, and release anything they’re holding onto. The feedback that some have “never seen anything like Good Active in LA” moves me every single time. I am so lucky to create this and bring this to others everyday.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce Good Active and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Good Active is a health & wellness community with a monthly membership called Team Active that hosts events and activations across LA and donates a portion of proceeds to various charities. We’re here to make holistic wellness accessible, and to create non-judgmental, safe spaces where like-minded people can connect, grow, and understand collectively that the word wellness doesn’t mean perfection. For us, it means working at becoming a little better each day.
Each of our events are curated differently and intentionally. We range from events focused on mental health, to physical fitness, to wellness education. Events big and small. Some more robust, some more low key. We are inclusive, not exclusive, and we are created for COMMUNITY.
What sets us apart is our give back element. We donate a portion of all event proceeds to charities each month. Philanthropy will always be at the core of everything we do. We are out to make a difference in the world and in the lives of those who need it most.
I’m most proud of the community we’ve cultivated. The monthly members who trust us enough to be part of this collectively. They mean everything to us and are the reason Good Active exists.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Since creating Good Active, I have faced people who have tried their absolute best to tear it down. People who have tried to sabotage me as a founder, the brand as a whole, and who have gone above and beyond to make sure this fails. In many cases like this, it can be difficult to tune out all the noise and stay focused on your goal. To this day, I laser in on my why and my mission. I know that what I’m building will always overpower any negative voices out in the world, because I’m doing it for the right reasons and because there are so many people who are benefiting from this work. The community in LA needs Good Active and that’s what keeps me going. The positive feedback from our community is louder than any negative voice. I am excited to continue bringing this brand to the people it’s created for. Resilience is what builds within you when you face turbulence, yet continue believing in yourself anyway.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think Good Active’s reputation was built through the community it serves. After our first few events, the brand began spreading like wildfire through the members who had attended. I still have people to this day DM me saying they’ve told so many friends about Good Active and how much they love it. We have a group of members who are all friends who drive a few hours out for our events that was kicked off through one of the friends in that group. She told the rest and they all joined together. We have a few members who signed up before even attending an event at all because of what they’ve heard about us from others. There is power in community and we are proof of that. We are eternally grateful to be attracting authentic community members who continuously show up for themselves and for us.
