Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexandra Benaim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Alexandra, thanks for joining us today. The more we talk about good leadership the more we think good leadership practices will spread and so we’d love for you to tell us a story about the best boss you’ve had and what they were like or what they did that was so great?
Hi! Thank you for having me.
I would have to say my dad. He has inspired me to really get involved in the fashion world. I loved what he was designing so that’s why I jumped onboard. It was a chance to show him and the culture we come from a lot of respect and adoration. He has an eye for things and the more time spent together, the more I got to realize this. That is in all honesty why I do what I do. For him, for my family, for the artisans of Morocco. I love my culture so much.
I spent much of my youth hiding from it, so this was how I made up for it. And the deeper you fall in love with something, the more investment happens.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Yes of course So we are Kin Amora, a loungewear line, made by local artisans in Morocco.
I got into the business because of my father. His collections were filled with different styles and colors. When I was a little girl, I would go to work with him and just be overwhelmed with what was going on. In a good way. Maybe that’s why I really joined the fashion world because of the memories I had as a little girl at the office. His office is a treasure chest of beautiful pieces and it inspired me to want to be around that and to eventually share it with the rest of the world.
The more time I spent with my dad, the more I got to spend time with the clothing of course. Little did I know how special this fabric was but once I started wearing some of his styles out, I would get complimented every time. I was thinking to myself….”wait a minute, maybe the universe is trying to tell me something.”
And then I decided to try it. I started my own line. I started specifically at markets and people would always share how much they loved the fabric. I think singlehandedly that is the most special thing about this brand. It is the material we work with. It is subtle but unique. And the colors…the colors are also probably my favorite part about the brand.
Between my father and I, we carry everything from dresses, pants, tops, jackets, bags, belts, shoes and jewelry.
Right now the direction I am going in is sets….pairing tops and pants together or jackets and pants together, or dresses and belts. So on and so forth.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
You really have to understand the most important part of your business is staying very grounded. Giving thanks to the process, the people involved in helping you create the magic and of course to those who support you in your magic. The way you approach things whether it’s going to your tailor, or speaking with production or speaking with interested buyers will delegate the future of your business. The less lessons you have to learn, the quicker you will succeed and I think the easiest approach is staying open to learning. Everyone will teach you something on the way so it is important to stay openminded, grounded and grateful.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being very friendly. Being happy honestly. Staying excited about the brand. People feel your excitement and they get curious. It is contagious. Even just talking about your brand to people, you will be surprised how people are intrigued because it is so unique and personal to your life. And from there, opportunities will open up.
When you feel the purpose is bigger than you, life will help support that in a very organic way.
