We were lucky to catch up with Alexander Zayid recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexander, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Throughout medical school, students rotate in different fields of medicine to gain an understanding of which specialty they would like to pursue. I found that regardless of the specialty rotation I was on, there was an apathetic attitude towards the signs and symptoms of aging. Whether the complaint was weight gain, lower libido or insomnia, the attending physician would offer more recommendations about settling into their age than solutions to their symptoms. I began to think of myself as the patient being told to simply accept aging and all the good and bad that comes with it. The issue is that I am not a complacent person with much of anything in my life, let alone my health or ability to ‘live.’ Just as I wondered why this was not being addressed in a way that was empathic towards patient complaints, I came across a plastic surgeon who had an entire division of hormone replacement therapy in his practice. I finally got to see men coming in complaining about body composition and motivation be provided with solutions, to see women who complained of insomnia since menopause be heard and treated by addressing the cause before throwing a pill at a problem. It was during this rotation I decided I would pursue a path in anti-aging medicine.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Alex Zayid, I am a medical doctor specializing in anti-aging. The field of anti-aging medicine involves a biologic and aesthetic approach to medicine to keep people feeling and looking their best. This can mean preventing wrinkles with the use of neurotoxins, restoring a man’s libido and motivation by replacement lost testosterone or helping a women get back to her premenopausal weight with the use of peptides.
I have a selfish interest in this field of medicine as I will one day be faced with the ailments of aging and will want answers and solutions to these symptoms. I am excited everyday to practice, learn and educate others on how we can slow the signs and symptoms of aging to truly LIVE while we are alive.
I took this interest and built ICON ANTI-AGING AND AESTHETICS, which is a full spectrum medical aesthetics practice that has services ranging from skin treatments, laser rejuvenation, facial injectables, hormone therapy to liposuction body contouring. Each one of my providers has a passion for anti-aging in their own respect to what they offer at ICON.
ICON, in conjunction with my passion for my work allowed me to be named the face of anti-aging in metro Detroit as well as named one of Detroit’s Top Doc’s by HOUR magazine in my second year in practice.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I was once told that money follows, it doesn’t lead. This couldn’t be more true of my patient approach that has lead to my growing success. I credit this to two words I hold myself accountable in practice; Honesty & Transparency.
As a Physician working in aesthetics, I understand the predatory nature of the field. Patients come to the office baring all insecurities regarding their looks and are primed to be coerced into spending money on services to regain their confidence.
Too often this is a business that over promises and under delivers. For this reason, whenever I am approaching a patient asking about a treatment, I am brutally honest and transparent about what the expected outcomes should be. Other times I will deny patients from a treatment I don’t think they would benefit from regardless of how much they wanted it. While this will deter some, it will gain the trust and credibility of all. Each patient I turn down for an unneeded procedure knows that in the future when I recommend something, it is going to be the right thing to do.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I really selected this question to get my father’s name into these answers…
My father, Geno T. Zayid was a Supreme Court winning attorney, great friend and amazing dad. Unfortunately he passed away very early in my life, which came with a world of struggles, but that stuff is boring to talk about. While his absence created hardships, it also served as permanent motivation for any obstacle I would take on later in life. My dad was a guy who really lived every second of the day. He would enjoy himself and maximize any situation he was in, whether it was in the court room or baseball field.
I think of what my dad would be doing if he were alive today (something great I know) and can’t help but smile at how proud he would be of my brother’s and I, but also never allowing us let up and become complacent. He believed in exhausting one’s capacity. Use all you are given in any circumstance and live to the best of your ability.
So when I think about my roles; husband, father, son, brother, physician & employer, I think of how I can be at my best & happiest to allow those around me to achieve that for themselves.
