We were lucky to catch up with Alexander McLaurin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alexander thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
It all depends on your mission and how you set up a soccer training business. I would say that it can be profitable if you strictly look at it as a business and just creating programs that generate revenue rather than provide good training value. The biggest challenge to profitability in my opinion can be finding the balance between wanting to provide good training to all players, regardless of their financial background. That is major reason on why we plan to create a non-profit branch that will go along side our for profit business. Our hope is that we can use the non-profit component to scholarship players who want to really develop and put the work into training, but maybe they/their families can afford it.
Our goal is to “Leave no footballer left behind”

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the business of wanting to train players and provide that holistic approach to training, because it is is major need, but was not something I had access to when I was coming through the system. In college I suffered major injury due to negligence/lack of knowledge by the coaching staff. This led to a mission of wanting to provide players with a 360 Development program that includes all aspects of being athlete, both on and off the field.
In the ever competitive world of youth sports, coaches, clubs and teams are often more concerned about the next win or trophy. This generally comes at the expense of true individual player development being overlooked. While soccer is a team sports, each individuals technical ability, tactical understanding, physical capability, and mental fortitude, is vital to the teams’ success.
Total90 Futbol Academy was founded on the idea that we believe that all players who are passionate about playing the game, as well as dedicated to putting in the effort and time into their development, should have the opportunity to do so in an environment that is professional, safe, fun, encouraging, and provides the right amount of challenge for each player to reach their potential. We also believe on making training and development accessible to all regardless of financial background, which is why we have set up programs and scholarship in that allow players equal opportunities.
At Total90 Futbol Academy, we believe that the process of creating a holistic Player Development environment can best be done through the cooperative interaction between professionals, coaches, athletes, and families. The implementation of that process is applied by everyone involved committing and holding each other accountable to maintaining high standards on and off the field. Our training programs are design around a player-centric methodology, focusing on individual development within a team environment. We place a high importance on designing programs age and skill specific, as well as researching and implementing the most current best development methods from around the world.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Simply by being good people and providing a quality service that is affordable. Having a staff that believes in the mission first rather than the financial gain has always been a major factor. We are always willing to work with kids, provide our soccer training services, and support them in their development, regardless if they can or cannot pay. I believe people see this, and appreciate the efforts we go to in order to help.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Just by adding different program as we grew. It all started as just private and group training that I was doing on my own. As that expanded I would save money to buy equipment, more field space, etc. Then I started organizing camps and bigger group training programs that would bring in more revenue. Those programs became successful and people wanted to have more of those camp and large group programs more regularly, which then turned the business into a full year program.
