We recently connected with Alexander Hume and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alexander thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
The main motivator for my business was my experience as an artist dealing with music engineers and mentors who didn’t excel in communication or in some cases, engineering itself. I’ve spent nearly half of my life educating myself about audio and have always strived to refine my intuition and skills over time. I also want to provide audio engineering services, education, and professional consulting to fellow queer artists, as well as other marginalized groups – facilitating a comfortable and productive environment for all walks of life. I’m extremely passionate about supporting/promoting my clients and I love to assist artists in self development, as well as achieving their goals.
Alexander, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been passionate about art for my entire life. I started producing, mixing, and mastering in my teens, which eventually developed into my full time job over my lifetime. Originally I specialized in mastering – over time I started to get more diverse projects and clients, eventually transitioning to a more comprehensive audio engineering business – mixing, mastering, production, consulting, and teaching. The things that set me apart from others are my esteemed high quality of work and communication, as well as my personal experience being an artist and navigating the industry. I’m proud to say that over the years I’ve worked with esteemed artists, labels, companies, and brands, as well as been a part of multiple Billboard Hot 100s, 100 million+ streams and 50+ Beatport Top 100s.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Putting together my studio for Hume Audio has been a lifelong process. I still have my 3 guitars and microphone from when I was a teen (they’ve made some friends over the years). At first any extra money that I had was reinvested into the business.
In the last two years I’ve refined my studio/business to only feature necessary things for me and my clients, removing material distractions – passing along those savings to my clients. I don’t have a $10,000 lease for a studio in Los Angeles or an assistant on payroll. It’s all me. I may have the highest quality equipment but my clients are focused on the product not the process – I’m extremely grateful to work with folks who aren’t materialistic and recognize that intuition, experience, and the end result is all that matters, not the tools and gear used to get to that point.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals! I seldom advertise my services outside of promoting projects that I’ve worked on – I’m proud to say my high quality work ethic has resulted in countless long term clients and friends.
