Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexander Hulett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Alexander thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
My creative journey has had many twists and turns but the one constant has always been music. Whether it was performing on stage across the country, making beats in my bedroom, or providing music therapy to patients with varying degrees of mental health needs I have always used music as a form of expression, healing, and growth. My current project, dharmonics, is a culmination of all these success and failures; a true representation of my journey thus far and the road that lies ahead. I truly believe I started this journey at exactly the right time as my music journey seems to parallel my spiritual one, intertwining to create emotive bass lines that transport the listener to far off lands. Looking back, could my journey have started earlier? Sure, but the journey is where we grow and develop into the artist we are meant to be.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Greetings! My name is Alexander Hulett and I go by the artist name of dharmonics. I am a meditative bass music producer who aims to bring the power of music to listeners to heal, grow, and gain insight into their own journey through life. After my attempts in music entertainment and an extensive background in clinical music therapy, time and my journey have culminated perfectly to create a project where fans can feel heard, understood and validated through music. dharmonics’ sonic foot print is engrained in eastern philosophy, art, and culture; using string instruments, flutes and percussive elements to transport the listener to a place of peace beyond their daily stressors and pulls of life.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience has been a skill who’s development has been in high gear in the last year of my projects growth. In any creative process there comes a moment where you share that art. That moment can be scary, anxiety inducing but can open the door to growth and strength. Releasing music to what seems like an empty void at times can be frustrating. You put your heart and soul into these tracks hoping to impact even just one person, little did I know that one person was me. Gaining confidence in your craft, knowing the value that you inherently possess to develop and hone in on your own sound can help you trust in your journey. This can lead to more sharing of your art, even in the face of reject from labels or other artists, so that you can find your fans and followers who connect with you and your musical journey.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One of the best resources I have is my mentor. Last year I was truly struggling with music production. Felt like my tracks lacked punch, lacked clarity, and lacked the message I was trying to convey to my listener. I needed help, which was something I always struggled to ask for. But I found one of my favorite artists, Eater, was offering 1:1 music production lessons. I had been alone in this journey prior to that moment. But he has helped guide me not only in my music but in how I present myself online, the value I can bring to my audience and fans, and the ins and outs of a growing music producer. Through his guidance I’ve seen growth in the last year that would have taken me years to accomplish on my own.
