We recently connected with Alexander Delzer and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexander, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Creating has risk built into it, especially when you’re first starting. I didn’t start writing till I was 18 and I’m so glad I did because it led me to be where I’m at now! At first, it was just writing down the ideas that would come into my head from time to time. I wasn’t trying to make full songs and I didn’t even know any music theory to compose anything to the lyrics and melodies I was coming up with. That first step of “taking seriously” those ideas I had was HUGE for me and I think anyone wanting to get into writing or songmaking should start taking the ideas they already have seriously by writing them down or recording them.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Alex Delzer and I’m a writer, producer, and artist from ND living in MN! I write and produce full-time for artists and bands. I love bringing a client’s song to life and getting to know the people I work with. I’m super fortunate to work with so many dope people on so many incredible songs. I mainly work with styles close to pop, R&B, hip-hop, and singer-songwriter, but I’ve also done some in punk and rock as well! I love new ideas, discovering fun sounds, and bringing the most out of someone’s vocal performance. I’ve been doing my own music since 2016 and I just recently went on my first tour!

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think by being genuinely interested in their work! If you have a friend or family member who creates things, one of the best compliments you can give them is to ask for them to show you what they’ve been working on!

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
“On Writing” by Steven King made me a better writer in less than 300 pages. I freaking love that book.
