We were lucky to catch up with Alexander Craig recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alexander , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Writing wise I think my most recent album is the most meaningful project I’ve put together. I made a hard shift when I decided to only sing the truth after “I” statements. The release focuses on progression and perseverance and also touches on positive life philosophy and personal growth. I’m proud of this collection of songs.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Generally speaking I’m a producer of art. I write, arrange, produce and mix my music as well as fully create my own music videos by covering all the coordination, directing and video editing. To my knowledge and in that respect I’m probably the most involved artist in the metro area related to self producing, funding, and releasing music and music videos.
Beyond music, I have a love for creating functional art like hotrod cars, chopper motorcycles, and many areas surrounding carpentry and residential interior design.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Studies surrounding the Chinese philosophy of Taoism was life changing for sure. Mainly allowing things to unfold naturally rather than forcing progress as well as the idea that all thoughts and actions reciprocate in some way or form. I highly recommend.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Being successful in a creative field, especially in western society has more to do with street smarts, small business experience, hustling and wise management of money and time than the actual quality of the art.
Self employed creatives have to be incredibly dynamic to keep the train moving in a forward direction and there it often a misconception by the masses that making and selling art is as easy as creating it.
More than half of my weekly investment in time surrounding my career has to do with administrative tasks, logistics, management, social networking, promotion and generally not interesting tasks that have little to do with creativity.
